What is a plug weld. How to make it with a welding inverter

  • Jul 31, 2021

Greetings to all metal lovers. Our channel is a collection of articles and videos for self-taught beginners in welding and locksmithing. I want to show you an interesting method of welding metals, which is called a plug seam!

We need to weld thin sheet metal to the frame from a corner or a shaped tube, or from another material. Or weld two thin metals with an overlap.

We simply mark on a thin sheet the places of conjugation with the base frame and drill holes in the place of this conjugation. We apply the metal to the base, press it well and weld it with an electrode through the holes. It turns out here is such a connection.

This spot weld is also called an electric rivet. Quite a pretty and strong connection turns out. An electric rivet or cork seam produces less metal deformation than a conventional weld seam. See where it applies.

You can boil the gate leaves or weld the sheet of a metal door to the frame. Yes, it will take more time than welding with short seams on the frame side. But on the other hand, it is so pretty and minimal deformation.

This is how the craftsmen cook in their garages when they do body repairs of cars. Holes are drilled around the perimeter of the part to be welded and through them they are welded with a semiautomatic device with other parts. Firmly and without deformation, such a part is connected to the body.

If anyone thinks that such welding is frivolous and the connection will not be particularly strong, then I hasten to dissuade them. Take a look at the following photos and everything will be clear.

These are welders making a homemade drawbar for a cargo trailer. Take a look at these connector pads. It is welded using the cork seam method. True, these 2 photos are not mine, but I also made such drawbars for trailers.

Those who have subscribed to the channel for a long time know that I have worked for a long time in the welding repair of cargo trailers. Imagine the effort the drawbar experiences, especially when the trailer is fully loaded, the cork seams rule!

So this method of welding can be safely used in your household and garage work with pieces of iron with a simple inverter. I will repeat once again for beginners - before welding, be sure to firmly press both parts together for a strong connection.
