In the jargon of Soviet thieves, the word "squeak" hides not something indecent at all. This was the name of perhaps the most important tool of a pickpocket thief. This device could be used to solve a wide variety of tasks related to criminal activity. What was this “squeak” and how did the thieves use it?

In the domestic art culture, thieves' squeak is mentioned repeatedly. The most striking and widely known works where the viewer can encounter this instrument is the series "Liquidation" with Vladimir Mashkov in the main roles and, of course, the serial Soviet feature film "The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed" by Stanislav Govorukhin based on the Weiner brothers' novel "Era mercy ". In the latter, it is the squeak that is thrown to the ground by the pickpocket Kostya Saprynkin, nicknamed "Brick", when he is detained by the MUR officers.

A squeak is a small handicraft knife or rather a blade made from a coin by sharpening it from one side. Piska had two purposes - primary and secondary. A thief could use a squeak for self-defense against annoying "colleagues" or even policemen. A cut on the face with a squeak is an extremely unpleasant and painful injury that can disorganize a person who did not expect such a person and give the thief time to leave.

However, the main purpose of this device was to make holes in the handbags and pockets of citizens in order to subsequently extract valuable items from them. By the way, the name "squeak" comes from the slang word "paint" - to cut, and not at all from the consonant slang name of the genital organ, as modern people might think.

It is also interesting that squeaks with a high degree of probability were used by thieves even before the time of the Soviet Union. Archaeologists find a representative number of old coins from the times of Catherine the Great, which are also sharpened, on the one hand. Obviously, the main tool of pickpockets has been around for centuries.
