Almost eternal battery: an energy source has been developed that will last for 28 thousand years

Scientific progress never stops. Scientists from all over the world are looking for hitherto unknown ways to improve the lives of future generations. One of the directions of this activity is the search for more efficient, affordable and at the same time safe sources of energy. And now, a real breakthrough in this matter was made by Californian scientists: they developed the concept of a nanobattery that will last 28 thousand years.

Just the other day, the Californian company NDB presented the concept of a battery, the service life of which, according to the developers, will be at least 28 thousand years. The source of energy in it will be nuclear waste. Thus, it turns out that the nano-battery will be powered by radioactive isotopes that are used in nuclear reactors.

Of course, when it comes to using a radioactive nucleus, the question of the safety of such an energy source arises. Therefore, it is not surprising that the developers not only coped with the solution of this problem, but also focused on this during the presentation of the concept. So, the energy source in the battery is protected by synthetic diamonds, which are located around the latter in several rows. Everyone knows that diamond is one of the hardest and most durable materials, which will be very difficult to damage or break.

In addition, the use of diamond in the manufacture of this battery has another practical meaning. The thing is that the energy of the radioactive nucleus will be absorbed by it due to inelastic dispersion - the same phenomenon is used to generate electricity.

The developers have outlined the intended use of nanodiamond batteries quite broadly. So, according to the available technical characteristics of this energy source, it can be used to power gadgets or equipment of literally any size - from smartphones and electric cars to passenger liners and even missiles.

Nima Golsharifi, CEO and co-founder of NDB developer company, said: “As members of the community, we are extremely concerned about the well-being of the planet and are focused on saving our planet for future generations... With the NDB battery, we have achieved a grand, innovative, patented technological breakthrough - a battery that does not emit harmful substances, works for thousands of years and requires access only to natural air for nutrition devices ".

It is not known exactly when and in what form the nanodiamond battery will hit the market. Today the company is actively engaged in further research in the development of this type of energy sources. However, not so long ago there was a statement from the developers, according to which work is already underway to create the first commercial prototype of the battery.
