Arugula has a rich spicy flavor and nutty aroma. It is grown as a lettuce, but it belongs to the Cabbage family. The seeds have a pungent taste, and the leaves have a slight bitterness. I want to draw your attention to some of the main points to consider when cultivating arugula.
Growing arugula in the garden
In our latitudes, culture cannot grow like a perennial. In this regard, with the onset of technical ripeness, it is harvested along with the root. Gardeners plant grass more than once a season, calculating the optimal planting period. The time from germination to ripening should be 14 to 30 days. Cold-resistant varieties are transplanted into the ground in early April, and the rest - at the end of the month.
Garden and soil for plants
Arugula loves to grow in lighted areas, protected from direct sunlight.
A plant needs fertile, loose soil. The predecessors on the site can be aster or leguminous crops, but by no means cabbage.
Care
The plant does not require special care. When planting in fertile soil, it is enough to do with weeding, loosening and watering.
You need to water the arugula as the soil dries up, combining the procedure with loosening. During the hot period of planting, water every day, morning and evening.
Diseases and parasites of arugula
The plant is rarely exposed to infections, its diseases must be looked for among cabbage diseases. But with optimal preventive measures and proper care, your green pets will not be able to get sick until harvest.
To prevent the culture from being struck by chlorosis, closer to autumn it is necessary to cover the plantings at night with a film.
Harder to deal with plant pests.
Cruciform flea eats up roots and leaves. For preventive measures, the following folk remedies are used:
- tobacco tincture (leaves in an amount of 200 g, pour 10 liters of hot liquid, let it brew for 2-3 hours and pour in liquid soap 1 tbsp. l.);
- dandelion solution (500 g of leaves and roots, pour in 10 liters of liquid, mix and add soap 1 tbsp. l.).
Cabbage moth damages leaves. Caterpillars and larvae are destroyed using the preparations Fitoverm, Bitoxibacillin. Also used "Kinmiks", "Fufanon-Nova".
List of the best arugula varieties
Arugula also has various varieties that summer residents especially like.

The plant ripens in 20-25 days. It is sown in open ground from spring to July, in a greenhouse - all year round.
Using arugula in cooking
Arugula is poorly stored, but due to the original nutty aroma and piquant taste, it is good to use it in the preparation of fresh salads. In this regard, I cut the spice into salads from cabbage or cucumbers, and I also use arugula for canning, adding to "green" salads, in small portions I put in containers with tomatoes or cucumbers. I cut off some of the greens at the roots and freeze them fresh in sachets: in winter I use them as a vitamin seasoning. And now I will describe the sequence of cooking my favorite salad, I hope you will like it too.
