The better you know the enemy, the easier it is to defeat him. This also applies to potato diseases. If you know how to identify diseases by the type of tubers, know what to do in case of illness, and know how to prevent it, then this will reduce crop losses several times.

The more potatoes?

Potatoes are the basis of our nutrition. However, diseases can significantly reduce the yield of this vegetable. It is affected by late blight, scab, alternaria. To preserve the harvest, you need to be able to recognize the disease.

Potato scab

Pathogens enter the tubers through damage. As a result, the appearance and taste of potatoes become worse, and the amount of nutrients in it decreases. Although you can still eat it by cutting off the affected area.

The disease has several varieties:

  • Common scab.
  • Powdery scab.
  • Silver scab.
  • Black scab.

Potato late blight

If you do not take action, then this disease will quickly spoil up to half of the harvest. It is better to prevent an attack than to fight it. The first sign of late blight is dark spots on the tops. Gradually, the plant dies, and spores form on the inner side of the leaf in the form of a light bloom. Spores are carried by rain and wind to other plants.

Potato Alternaria

Dry spotting is quite common. Usually it affects no more than 5% of potatoes, but in dry weather it can spread to 50% of the plants.

If Alternaria has appeared in your garden, then in mid-June you will notice spots on the lower leaves of the potatoes. The lesion will then spread higher and affect the stems.

Alternaria rarely spreads to tubers.

To conserve crops, choose varieties that are resistant to these diseases.
