Cannes have large leaves and bright flowers. Plants are tropical, so they need special care when it gets cold. Preparation for wintering consists in digging up the plants and storing the tubers. Sometimes trimming of the aboveground part is required. The procedures are performed before frost. In the spring, the plants need to be planted again in open ground.

Tubers can be left for wintering only where the temperature in winter does not drop below -5 degrees. In these warm regions, it is possible to trim the plants to the ground in the fall and cover with spunbond.

How to dig up plants correctly

The tubers need to be dug up in October. Remember that finicky varieties may not survive even a slight frost. If the autumn is cold, then it is better to dig up the plants in September. Storage is carried out in the basement or refrigerator. The tubers can also overwinter in flower pots. In any case, they are dug up with a shovel when the weather is warm.

Storing cannes in a cellar or basement

It is necessary to prune the leaves by 17-20 cm. The tubers should be shaken off a little, but not completely removed. Next, the tubers should dry out under a canopy. They are packed in a box with wet peat, sawdust and sand in equal proportions. The box is placed in the cellar, where the air temperature is constantly maintained at 4-7 degrees.

It is recommended to inspect the tubers on a monthly basis and moisten the substrate if it dries out. If rotten spots are found on the tuber, then the affected area must be cut off by sprinkling with crushed coal.

If the plant is excessively tall, it is allowed to slightly shorten it. The plant is dug up with a clod of earth and transplanted into a large flower pot. Cannes can be kept like this on a warm balcony or veranda. In this room, the temperature should be 13-15 degrees.

It is recommended to water the plant once every 14-15 days. It cannot be poured so that the roots do not start to rot.

Dry leaves and flowers should be periodically removed from cannes if they winter on the windowsill. The plant loves bright, sunny places. To make it bloom in winter, you can feed it with mineral fertilizer.

At the end of December, Cannes has a rest time of up to two months. During this period, the stems and leaves dry out. After - the formation of new leaves occurs. During the dormant period, the plant does not need to be fed. You can sometimes water it if the ground is dry.

In April, cannes can be transplanted into the ground, but only if there is already constantly warm weather. There should be no returns to frost.

Cold storage

Cannes is kept in the refrigerator well enough, but the method is not popular. In the autumn period, the tubers need to be dug up, rinsed from the ground under a stream of clean water, kept in a manganese solution for 24 hours and dried. Next, each tuber should be wrapped in paper and placed in the vegetable compartment.
