Honeysuckle belongs to berry bushes, fruits ripen early. The plant is unpretentious to care for, it takes root quickly enough. To grow it, you must follow some rules for planting and maintenance, which I will tell you about.
Is it possible to plant honeysuckle in the fall
Honeysuckle has good winter hardiness, tolerates frost down to -50 ° C, during flowering it is not afraid of temperatures down to -7 ° C. So autumn is considered the best period for planting (the last days of September-October).
Autumn planting gives:
- high survival rate;
- good rooting;
- stratification of the bush.
In the autumn, the bush will get stronger, calmly prepare for the harsh winter, and with the arrival of spring it will quickly grow green mass.
Planting time
I planted honeysuckle in September-October, some gardeners are planting in March-April.
The survival rate and development of culture is influenced by climatic and temperature conditions:
- in Moscow and the region - disembarkation occurs at the beginning of autumn;
- in middle regions - until mid-September;
- in the southern regions - late October - early November, in the absence of frosts.
In Siberia and the Urals, plants should be planted in the spring.
Selecting a seedling and a plot
I always buy seedlings in trusted stores and I advise you the same. Take a biennial plant with more than one trunk, about 40-50 cm high, with developed roots.
Crops prefer fertile, loose soils, but they can grow on scarce land. The sun's rays should constantly shine at the top, and the root system should be in partial shade.
Honeysuckle is not suitable for a hill, sandy ground with the presence of groundwater, open areas with drafts.
The culture prefers to grow in a sunny or partial shade location.
The culture does not tolerate the neighborhood with tomatoes, potatoes, sunflowers, Jerusalem artichoke. Suitable plants are currants and gooseberries. And also honeysuckle is friends with pome plants;
- pear;
- apple tree;
- quince;
- rowan;
- hawthorn.
Proper preparation of the bush and soil
Before planting, the seedling must be inspected, damaged parts and dried roots must be removed. Long roots need to be shortened to 30 cm.
The culture grows in one area for many years, the planting site must be prepared correctly:
- Dig up the soil thoroughly with a turn over of the earth.
- Remove all residual weeds.
- Add 400 g of dolomite flour or hydrated lime to the soil if deoxidation is required.
- Then tamp the ground with a rake.
Prepare planting holes up to 40 cm deep in 7-14 days. The gap between the pits should be up to 1.5 m.
Autumn planting of honeysuckle
In order not to get into trouble during planting in the autumn, some points should be taken into account:
- Before planting, the roots must be dipped in a Heteroauxin solution (50 g / 1 l of liquid).
- Put drainage at the bottom of the hole, add organic matter with mineral fertilizers (superphosphate 200 g, potassium salt 35-40 g).
- Install the seedling, sprinkle with soil. Do not deepen the root collar.
- Water, mulch the soil.
Many varieties are self-fertile. In this regard, plant 3-5 different varieties.
Some erroneous actions
For a good harvest, follow these rules:
- do not get sick and weak bushes;
- do not choose shaded areas for planting;
- do not forget to fertilize with fertilizers;
- be sure to water the plants.
