Garlic is a popular, unpretentious crop that grows in almost every vegetable garden. It is planted both in spring and autumn. I prefer planting a vegetable in winter.

Landing dates

Since I live in the middle lane, I start planting garlic in winter in late October - early November. It is important that light frosts are established on the street, otherwise the culture will give seedlings that will die in winter.

In the southern region, the procedure is carried out in mid-November. In the north - in early October.

At the same time, I make sure that the daytime temperature is no more than 10 ° C. Thus, the teeth will have time to form a sufficiently strong root system to survive the cold.

Benefits of planting winter garlic

Based on my experience in growing crops, I can say that garlic planted in spring has good keeping quality and is stored practically until the next season.

Winter crops have the following advantages:

  1. Gives early shoots and early harvest. I use it to make fresh salads, soups, sauces and preserves.
  2. Possesses high immunity to various diseases.
  3. Naturally hardened and easily tolerates weather changes.
  4. Winter varieties are large.
  5. It does not require a lot of time and effort for planting and leaving.
  6. The crop is more abundant than when planted in spring.
  7. The soil in the fall is already warmed up and saturated with water - the optimal conditions for the plant to take root faster and form a strong root system.

There are also minor flaws:

  1. The timing of boarding must be carefully chosen.
  2. Only frost-resistant varieties are suitable.

I prefer the following:

  • Messidor;
  • Lyubasha;
  • Dobrynya;
  • Hermidor.

Having determined the landing dates, I proceed to the event.

Preparation of planting material

First of all, I select the cloves.

They should be as follows:

  • large;
  • no signs of disease, traces of rotting and mechanical damage;
  • no mold;
  • with an intact upper shell.

Then I make sure to process the planting material:

  1. I dry the heads thoroughly.
  2. Gently, so as not to damage the outer shell and the point of root growth, I divide it into cloves.
  3. Soak in saline for 10 minutes.
  4. Disinfecting in a solution of copper sulfate.

I recommend preparing the saline solution in this way:

  • table salt - 3 tbsp. l .;
  • water - 5 l.

I thoroughly dissolve salt in hot water. As soon as the liquid has cooled, I place the garlic cloves in the container.

Garlic planting rules

The crop is great for tighter planting. This is a great option for those with small personal plots.

The best neighbors in such a bed are the following crops:

  • Dill;
  • salad;
  • strawberries.

I make a separate bed for the garlic. The place should be open, with plenty of light, protected from drafts. The occurrence of groundwater is at least 1.5 m. If the site is low and water accumulates on it, especially thawed, this can provoke the appearance of fungal infections. In this case, I recommend making raised beds.

I reach the maximum amount of harvest by adhering to the planting scheme:

  1. I dug up the area on the bayonet of the shovel.
  2. I make grooves 15 cm deep.
  3. I pour a small layer of sand on the bottom.
  4. I bring in superphosphate.
  5. I place the cloves by pressing lightly.
  6. I keep a distance of 10 cm between the teeth. Between furrows - 25 cm.
  7. Sprinkle with earth and a small layer of wood ash.

Planting, especially in the northern regions, I recommend mulching with spruce branches. So the garlic will not freeze even in the most severe winter. In the spring, as soon as the snow begins to melt, I remove the spruce branches so that the cloves do not spray.

I have been planting garlic before winter for several years. I harvest high, with excellent taste.
