Young and professional growers install structures on their plots to protect plants from weather changes and extend the gardening season by several months. However, any greenhouse building requires maintenance at the end of the growing season. Cleaning and preparation of the greenhouse structure for the winter season
As soon as the cultivation season is over, a number of measures must be taken in the greenhouse to prepare the building for wintering. These works are carried out in the fall.
Cleaning
All plant residues must be removed. It is necessary to collect unripe fruits from crops, put them in boxes and place them in a warm place to ripen. Clean the ridges of fallen leaves and mulch.
Assemble the drip irrigation system. Remove the cords that were used to tie the plants and do not use them next year, as they can be left with fungal spores and parasites. So, I advise you to burn the residues from the vegetation and all the garters.
All containers must be rinsed, disinfected, dried and stored until next season.
Fertilizing the soil
It is best to add organic matter to the ground in the form of rotted manure, humus or good compost. Compost with humus can be scattered over the surface, and manure can be spread at the rate of 10 kg / sq. m. Then carry out a digging.
If it is not possible to purchase natural fertilizers, you can use the sowing of siderates (mustard, lupine, alfalfa, peas). As soon as they grow up, the plants should be cut at the root and dug in.
Some summer residents water the cut green manure with a biological product. To do this, use: "Baikal EM-1", "Shining-1", which are used strictly according to the instructions.
Use of fungicides
The soil is sprayed with preparations:
- Fitosporin-M;
- copper sulfate (10%);
- bordeaux liquid.
They also carry out general cleaning of the premises by rinsing all internal surfaces of the greenhouse with hot soapy water.

There is no consensus on whether it is necessary to close the building before the arrival of the spring period.
The case for open doors
Arguments include getting rid of fungal pathogens, freezing out parasites and eliminating the adhesion of the snow layer to the roof.
Freezing soil
After freezing the pests in the soil (after two months), the beds in the greenhouse must be covered with snow so that the soil does not dry out.
Hibernating parasites
Open doors help balance the temperature outside and inside the greenhouse. In addition, during the winter, frost destroys the parasites that have settled in the winter near the surface of the earth, fungal spores and pathogens freeze out.
Getting rid of snow sticking
Warm air usually rises to the ceiling, as a result, the bottom layer of snow on the roof melts, and in severe frosts, the bottom layer turns into ice.
Such snow is difficult to clear from the roof, and with the onset of a thaw, it can even fall into the greenhouse.
It will be good if you make vents on opposite walls for ventilation.
Open door risk
Some experienced summer residents are against opening the doorway throughout the winter.
The arguments against open doors:
- during winter storms, gusts of wind can shake them and, worse, even bring down the greenhouse;
- large snowdrifts can form inside the building, which will delay the heating of the soil for a long period in the spring.
