Mulching is the creation of a protective layer on the soil around the plant. As a rule, shrubs and trees are mulched. Mulch creates a natural and light protective cover that protects the roots from cold and excessive drying.

Do I need to mulch currants

Under natural conditions, a protective layer always forms on the soil near the root zone. Moss, fir needles, last year's foliage and grass are natural natural mulch. In garden conditions, you can create an artificial barrier that will not be inferior in its characteristics to natural processes.

Mulching currants will allow you to adjust the water balance, protect the roots from midges and other insects. The fact is that the currant does not like excess moisture and excessive dryness, and for everyday worries it can be difficult not to miss the moment of watering the bush.

Natural materials for mulching

I prefer to use natural ingredients to form the soil around the bush. Among the popular and affordable methods are:

  • straw mulching. Dry cut grass will perfectly protect the soil from drying out and excess moisture, will not allow the root system to rot, odorous meadow grasses can repel most insect pests;
  • sawdust contributes to proper aeration of the soil, and also retains heat. The soil near the currant acquires the features of peat, which allows the currant to develop better;
  • needles can be another organic material. Needles, cones and tree bark are perfect for mulching currants. Such material is not blown away by the wind, does not get wet and has bactericidal properties. Mulch will protect not only the soil, but also plants from certain types of diseases and pests. The needles perfectly repel slugs from the site;
  • compost is a versatile material, it can be used for various horticultural crops, vegetables, and also for currants. Compost not only protects, but also nourishes the soil, various organic and mineral substances enter the roots.

Using organic mulch is the best option, but it is worth remembering that the protective layer must be updated annually. And the hay or coniferous pillow is also periodically disinfected. Pests and fungal diseases can develop in rotten foliage.

Types of inorganic mulch

Inorganic materials can also be used to protect the soil around the currant bush. You can’t get nutrients from them, but in terms of protection they have no equal:

  • agrofibre or agrofabric is a lightweight and durable material that is used to protect many crops. Agrofibre allows sunlight and water to pass through, maintains the optimum temperature and protects against pests;
  • roofing material can lie on the soil without replacement for up to 3 years, weeds will not grow under the roofing material, this is an excellent protective material for those who do not want to bother with mulching every season;
  • cardboard is an inexpensive and effective solution. Now cardboard is not bleached with caustic chemicals, so it is safe for soil and currants;
  • pebbles or small stones are a rather controversial solution. On the one hand, they get very hot under the sun and can contribute to the drying of the soil, and on the other hand, dew forms on the stone, which can serve as an additional source of moisture.

Regardless of the type of mulch, it is worth remembering that too much layer will block the access of oxygen and nutrients. Organics need to be changed every year Inorganic mulch - at least once every 3 years, depending on the material. Subject to all the rules, currant bushes will always be protected.
