Blooming rose, lavender attracts attention with bright petals. Decorate the site with clematis, hydrangea. For quality development, these plants require a shelter that saves from winter frosts. I use a variety of materials for this purpose.

Shelter rose

I am starting activities to protect the rose garden from freezing in the first half of November. During this period, the night temperature is set in the range of -4... -5 ° C.

Above the rose bushes belonging to the group of ground cover plants and floribundas, I install a low frame using wooden slats or thick flexible wire. I fill it with dry leaves.

Climbing young roses have long stems, removed from the support, I pin to the ground, strewn with spruce branches. I also cover it with coniferous branches. Additionally, I throw on and securely fasten the agrofiber cloth.

It is dangerous to bend the lignified stems of adult bushes, as they can break. I wrap them with mesh material, fixing it with a rope. I fill the inner space with dried sawdust, foliage or needles. To protect against precipitation, I put a bulky plastic bag on the structure, securing it with a cord.

Lavender shelter

Only narrow-leaved lavender is well able to endure winter frosts. For the rest of the species, I provide shelter.

I do not prune the plants. In November, I mulch the surface with dried crushed humus or peat, which protects the roots. I make a layer of material in 5-7 cm. Above each bush, I install a low structure, which allows air to flow freely to the stems. I cover it with spunbond.

I move the lavender cultivated in flowerpots and other containers to the glazed balcony.

Shelter of clematis

Varieties that produce delicate flowers on the stems of the current year, I mulch. I spend 1-2 buckets of loose humus on a bush.

Clematis, which form buds on last year's shoots, require mandatory implementation in the fall of shelter-oriented activities.

Algorithm of actions:

  1. Cover the root collar with a layer of mulch. Usually I use peat. Rotten loose compost can be used.
  2. On the ground near the clematis bushes, I lay large branches, trimming boards. This will protect the stems from contact with the ground.
  3. I wrap the bushes with spunbond, fixing it with a cord.
  4. I bend the neatly prepared stems to the pre-laid plant protective cushion.
  5. I secure with wire staples.
  6. Sprinkle with leaves, hay or spruce branches.
  7. I will equip a board or slate shield on top.

Hydrangea shelter

I protect the large-leaved hydrangea from freezing, as it may not bloom next season due to the impact of the cold. Treelike crops usually do not need shelter. In panicle hydrangea, young bushes at the age of 1-3 years can be affected.

I practice activities designed to protect hydrangea in November. During this period, the subzero temperature is already stable.

I lay out the paws of conifers under the bushes, making a layer to a height of 7-10 cm. On them I fix the stems bent to the ground. I cover them again with spruce branches, which, if necessary, I replace with chopped straw or hay. I put on a cloth of agrofibre on top, which I securely fix around the perimeter with cobblestones or bricks.

If the stems do not bend well, then I tie them with a soft twine, and then gently wrap them with spunbond. Around I make a structure of a flexible metal mesh in the form of a hut, the inner space of which I fill with dried foliage. I cover this structure with a film.

Flower gardens, subject to the rules for shelter before the winter season, will consistently delight with abundant bright buds.
