The winter greenhouse allows the owner to receive fresh vegetables throughout the year. Planting crops in a greenhouse before winter has its advantages and disadvantages. It also has a number of features. I will tell you about this later.
Arrangement of a winter greenhouse
Almost any crop can be grown in a polycarbonate greenhouse. To use the space as efficiently as possible, you should consider the heating system in the design. This is especially true for the northern regions. You will also need to provide additional lighting. For most crops, daylight hours should be 10-14 hours.
Greenhouse heating can be done using:
- Electrical equipment. If it is possible to connect the structure to the mains, infrared heaters, convectors and electric fireplaces are used.
- The ovens are rough. It should be built near the entrance. Among the disadvantages of this method, one can single out a strong overdrying of the air.
- Air sleeve. With this method, the air is also overdried, but it allows you to quickly heat the room.
Warming up the earth can be done as follows:
- Run a heating cable over the bed. It should be buried to a depth of about 40 cm. The main advantage of this method is the ability to control the soil temperature with an accuracy of 1 degree.
- Lay heating pipes. Such a system can also be used to heat indoor air, if it is carried out not only underground. You will also need to install a boiler with a pump.
- Biologically. To do this, you need to remove the top 40 cm of earth. Then compost layers are laid, which will generate heat during decomposition. The first layer should be sawdust, the second - plant residues, the third - a mixture of 5 kg of sawdust, 10 kg of sand and 60 kg of humus. Then everything is thoroughly watered and covered with foil. A month later, you can move on to planting plants.
Warm organic beds can also be used outdoors if you want the crop to emerge earlier. In addition to heating, such a bed feeds the plants for several years, so fertilizers can be abandoned.
Crops that can be grown in a greenhouse in winter
The following plants are suitable for growing all year round in a greenhouse:
- Onions, lettuce, basil, sorrel, parsley.
- Tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, hot peppers.
- Carrots, radishes, beets.
- Strawberries, melons and gourds.
- Aloe, mint.
- Tulips, violets, asters, roses, peonies.
Landing features
The first step is to make sure that the land in the beds is of high quality. On insulated beds, it is necessary to change the fertile layer every year. In greenhouses where it is planned to grow several types of vegetables at once, long beds should be zoned. This is especially important if the plants require different growing conditions, including light and humidity.
In the warmest places, you should plant cucumbers and tomatoes. In the remaining area, crops are planted that are more loyal to the temperature regime.
In large greenhouses, the height of the plants is the main factor affecting the arrangement of crops in the beds. Tall ones are planted at the side walls, fixed on the trellis. Low-growing ones should be placed on internal beds.
When placing the plants in the greenhouse, do not over-thicken the rows. With a dense planting, air circulation will be disrupted, which will lead to the development of fungal infections.
