Why Project Barracuda submarines are making the US nervous

There is at least one type of domestic weapon that is guaranteed to make American army commanders of all levels and positions wake up in a cold sweat. We are talking about Russian submarines, many of which do not just trace their ancestry, but were directly created back in the days of the Soviet Union. The absolute record holder for growing gray hair on the heads of the Pentagon's military analysts is the Sierra-I class submarines, which are called the Barracuda in their homeland.

Barracuda is such a sea fish that cunningly sits in ambush among thickets or in troubled water, and then abruptly grabs with its powerful jaws an unsuspecting smaller fish swimming by. Very often, a barracuda attack is accompanied by an unexpected and rapid dash from an ambush. An extremely rare marine inhabitant can get away from such a pursuer, especially when caught by surprise.

Submarines of the "Barracuda" project are also "sea inhabitants" only made of iron and rubber with 61 valiant sailors inside. Even those who are not at all interested in the subject of weapons should probably guess that the most important function of submarines in the current realities is the launch of nuclear missiles. However, in reality, the "classic" submarine war with the interception of sea convoys has not gone anywhere. Moreover, someone has to intercept submarines serving as launchers. On the part of the Soviet Union, this function is performed by the Barracuda submarines.

Submarines with a displacement of 9.6 thousand tons were created as part of the program for the modernization of second-generation submarines and the transition to the third generation in the 1970s. Nikolai Iosifovich Kvasha became the chief designer of the 945 project. The updated "Barracudas" were just intended to wage war with other submarines, warships and transport ships of a potential enemy. To do this, they had a variety of missile and torpedo armament: two torpedo tubes under the RPK-7 "Veter", four torpedo tubes RPK-6 "Waterfall", as well as launchers of MANPADS 9K310 "Igla-1".

The Soviet "hunter fish" could spend up to 100 days in autonomous mode, looking for its prey or waiting for it in ambush. The maximum underwater speed of the submarine could reach 35.15 knots. The maximum diving depth reached 550 m. Thus, even one single "Barracuda" could easily become the ship that would take away from the American budget several tens of millions of dollars for a couple of shots. Submarines of Project 945 served until 1998. After that, the last of the real "Barracudas" were sent for recycling. However, the pedigree of spear hunters has not been interrupted. Today in the service of the Russian Navy are boats 971 "Pike-B" and 945A "Kondor", which are direct descendants.
