How to choose seeds

Good seeds - there will be an excellent harvest, so I prefer to purchase material only from those manufacturers who have managed to establish themselves in my garden, or have been recommended by friends summer residents. Before buying cucumbers, I think over what, where and how it will grow in the garden. It depends on which seeds should be stored.

Let's take a look at the varieties first. They are divided into universal, pickling and salad. The latter can only be consumed fresh. They are not suitable for conservation. You also need to decide where you will grow your cucumbers - in a greenhouse, on a window or in the open field.

We deal with the inscriptions on the packaging

On the bags with seeds, you can often find incomprehensible designations. Let's take a look at the most important ones:

  • F1 is a hybrid. The plants obtained by crossing are disease resistant and productive.
  • S - higher in class than F1, elite seeds. Generations are marked with Arabic numerals.

How to calculate the required number of seeds

To do this, you should know the approximate area of the garden. For example, I have three beds measuring 1 by 3 meters. I plant cucumbers at a distance of 0.7 meters, 20 centimeters between plants. On such an area about 20 bushes are placed, on three beds - 60 plants. Just do not forget to make an allowance for germination, cucumbers from 10 seeds, on average, hatch by 7. Thus, I need to sow about 80 seeds. Most manufacturers indicate the number of grains in grams on the bag. Each gram contains about 40-50 pieces.

What kind of cucumbers do you need?

Choose varietal or hybrid cucumbers - everyone must decide for himself. The hybrids are high-yielding, almost do not get sick, the female and male flowers are evenly spaced, they feel great even in unfavorable growing conditions. Varietals have their own advantages: seeds can be harvested from plants, fruits are universal, and cucumbers themselves tolerate heat well.

By adhering to my buying recommendations, you can easily get the right amount of good quality seeds that will delight you with an excellent harvest.
