Why did the USSR use expensive cast iron pipes instead of cheap plastic ones?

Even today, memories of cast-iron pipes make the legs of those plumbers who were lucky enough to start their labor activity back in the days of the USSR to give way. Even those who have already retired recall the cast-iron pipes with a shudder. Moreover, today there is something to compare with. Lightweight plastic pipes are a big step forward. The question is, why did they not use PVC pipes all this time in the USSR?

The plastic sewer pipe has many advantages. The first and most important is that it is very easy and comfortable to work with. Installation of such a pipe for modern plumbers is a matter of technology. You can trim it with a hand-held tool, and things like riveting joints can be done in minutes. At the same time, the PVC pipe is corny light. It is also very cheap, at least when compared to metal pipes. It is also generally accepted that the service life of plastic pipes is also higher. True, there are drawbacks, for example, just disgusting noise insulation.

Cast-iron pipes are another matter: they clog up faster, weigh more, working with such pipes is a continuous torment. Especially when the master was already "spoiled" by modern PVC pipes. A cast iron pipe is very heavy, its installation takes a long time and is not the easiest thing, both from a technical point of view and from the physical effort. Then why in the USSR almost all sewer pipes were cast iron? Really, the Soviet industry could not make its own plastic.

Firstly, plastic pipes began to appear in late Soviet buildings. Secondly, for a long time the chemical industry of the USSR was not developed enough to engage in the mass production of PVC pipes. In fairness, it should be noted that this was the case throughout the world. Modern plastic sewerage is a relatively young technology. And the most important thing is the price of cast iron. After all, everything is relative within the framework of a specific economic system. When cast iron pipes were massively stamped in the USSR, they were trite cheaper than any plastic made at that time. The Soviet Union was one of the leaders in the production of pig iron.

By the way, cast iron pipes also have many advantages. They are very durable, completely fireproof, and they also provide the best tightness.
