I have repeatedly seen that builders use a conventional grinder with a metal disc installed to cut corrugated board and metal tiles. It didn't bother me before. Indeed, everything is logical: the metal is cut with the appropriate disc.
But a couple of months ago I was lucky enough to talk to a professional builder. He said that cutting the profiled sheets with a grinder is strictly prohibited. "Why so?" - you ask. I answer:
- 1. Firstly, when the grinder's disc touches the metal, it spoils its upper anti-corrosion layer. As a result, the sheets become covered with rust over time, and their service life is reduced.
- 2. Secondly, at present, most manufacturers cover corrugated board and metal tiles with a polymer layer. Sparks from the cutting process can melt this layer. It is not only the appearance of the material that suffers, but its service life is also reduced.
Explained everything clearly? Hope so! Naturally, now I am simply obliged to tell you what can and should be done to cut corrugated board.
I am telling from the words of the same builder. He assures that the profiled sheets should be cut with a special hacksaw. Thanks to its use, an even edge remains on the material. But for curved cuts, it is better to use something else.
1. Namely jigsaw (manual or electric). This will slow down the cutting somewhat, but the protective layer of the metal will remain intact. And when the metal is intact, then it will serve for many years.
2. If it is not necessary to leave the edges of the profiled sheets without burrs and chips, you can use electric scissors. They cut quickly and effortlessly:
- It is better to cut the profiled sheets with slotted scissors, since they leave an even edge, do not spoil the material.
- Nibblers are needed to cut sheets in parallel straight lines (no need to bend metal). This tool is ideal for carving tight turns.
3. Another option for cutting metal tiles is special drill bits. But for a common man in the street, this method is too complicated. As a rule, attachments are used on screwdrivers and drills.
Eliminate the risk of rust formation at the cutting sites
Unfortunately, corrosion at the edges of the profiled sheets can appear after using any tool. Protective mastic or other special compounds that need to be processed metal helps to eliminate the problem. It will also help to extend the service life of the corrugated board.
