Many owners of suburban areas dream of creating a lush "green fence". I advise you to use thuja for this purpose, since this plant does not require special care for itself and, moreover, it grows quickly and has a gorgeous crown.
Why is it recommended to choose thuja for creating a hedge
Thuja is not in vain considered a suitable crop for creating a green hedge. It is easy to care for, belongs to perennials and, moreover, does not lose its green cover in winter. With the help of cropping, you can create not only fences, but also various green shapes in the form of animals.
A hedge performs one of the most important functions: it protects the site and buildings from prying eyes. Tui cope with this perfectly, since their height reaches up to 20 m.But these plants are capable of performing other functions:
- create a barrier for the penetration of dirt, dust, wind;
- provide a peaceful environment;
- delay snow cover;
- cleanse air masses from harmful impurities;
- frame your garden in an original way.
In order for trees to develop faster, strictly follow the rules for planting and subsequent caring for them. Be sure to choose the correct drop off site. Thuja prefers to grow in partial shade, and constant irrigation must be organized for the plant in a sunny area.
Types and varieties of thuja for planting in the local area
Today there are many different varieties of thuja that can be used to decorate a hedge. I will tell you about the most popular of them that you can plant on your site.
- Thuja Brabant is quite winter-hardy and unpretentious in care. With the help of the culture, a high and green wall is formed, which must be trimmed twice a year: in spring and in August. The plant grows quickly up to 4 m in height. When creating a hedge, thuja should be planted at intervals of up to a meter.
- A dense wall up to 2.5 m high is formed from the Holmstrup variety. The plant grows slowly and only after 10 years will it reach its height. These conifers only need to be watered.
- Thuja Smaragd has a narrow cone-shaped crown, height up to 6 m. The variety is wind-resistant, frost-resistant.
For small hedges, you can use dwarf varieties:
- Tui Danika has a spherical crown, height up to 80 cm. With abundant watering and timely pruning, the crown acquires a diameter of up to one meter.
- Little Dorrit is a cold-resistant culture, spherical crown, about 60 cm in diameter.
- Tuya Hozeri reaches a height of up to 50 cm. used when creating a small fence or rock garden.
Thuja fencing: breeding, planting and subsequent care
Thuja is best propagated with seedlings purchased from a specialized nursery. The root system must be strong and intact.
Plant in the spring or early fall. Plant seedlings at a distance of 1.5 to 2 m.Dug a hole to a depth of 70 cm. The width should be greater than the earthen coma on the seedling. Any soil is suitable for these conifers, but peat with sand and fertilizer must be put in the hole before planting. When burying the plants, cover the root collar with soil.
For the first few years, do weeding, loosening, and constant watering. If the needles turn yellow, then the plant does not have enough moisture or it is infected with bacteria. Two to three years after planting, feed in the spring with special agents designed for thuja.
Cover young seedlings from the scorching sun. Before wintering, cover the roots with spruce branches, tying the branches to the main trunk.
To create a beautiful fence, cut the thuja in autumn and spring, or once, depending on the variety. Cut young crops at least twice a year, older crops three times a year. Cutting tools must be sharp.
Although conifers are considered unpretentious, proper plant care will help grow beautiful thuja with a chic and lush crown.
