Every summer resident grows potatoes in the garden. There are a huge number of its varieties that are used for regions with different climatic conditions. But gardeners prefer fruitful varieties that are resistant to diseases, pests and with excellent taste.
The best varieties of potatoes
I recommend choosing varieties of potatoes for planting with different ripening times. For example, one variety is early maturing, the other is mid-maturing, late. This will allow you to harvest as it ripens and to eat young potatoes throughout the summer. Also, when choosing a particular variety of potatoes, I always take into account its resistance to diseases and pests. Keep in mind that keeping quality depends on the type of potato.
Early varieties
Using the method of many years of experiments, I made the conclusions for myself that the best early potato varieties are:
- Luck. Differs in drought resistance, high yield, late blight resistance.
- Vineta. A variety of German selection, allowing you to collect a bountiful harvest. The fruits themselves are smooth, light yellow, with excellent keeping quality.
- Impala. Dutch potatoes, each tuber weighing 150 g. It is characterized by a high starch content, but it falls apart during cooking. From one bush, you can collect about 3.5 kg of potatoes.
- Red Scarlett. An early variety with a high yield. Fruits are elongated, pink in color. Ripening of tubers occurs one and a half months after planting.
- Zhukovsky. An early ripe variety with pink skin and white flesh. Well suited for salads. Ripens 45 days after planting and has a long shelf life.
Mid-season varieties
Of the mid-season potato varieties I like the most:
- Gala. It is characterized by high yield, dark yellow pulp, high starch content. This variety has the highest keeping quality.
- Lugovskoy. Disease resistant variety. Ripens 2.5 months after planting. Tubers are medium in size, beige, elongated.
- Nevsky. Light-skinned potatoes with white flesh. One bush can be harvested up to 5 kg.
Better late-ripening potatoes
As for the late varieties of potatoes for planting in my garden, I prefer:
- Atlanta. The fruits ripen 60 days after planting. The potatoes are light beige in color and medium in size. The variety is distinguished by high immunity to diseases and good keeping quality.
- Picasso. Ripens 3 months after planting. Resistant to diseases and pests. But he does not have a very high keeping rate.
Summing up, I want to note that each summer resident independently chooses for himself one or another variety of potatoes that he wants to grow in the beds. But most of all I like the varieties: Luck (characterized by high yields and resistance to diseases and pests), Nevsky (it has the same fruits that it is recommended to bake in the oven, cook in uniforms), Lugovskoy (I love this variety for its good keeping quality), Red Scarlett (I like that this variety ripens before anyone else the rest).
I always choose potatoes for planting in appearance, size, color, presence of starch, in terms of ripening, taste. I hope my article will help you decide on the best potato varieties to plant in your garden.
