The land on my site is not fertile enough, so I have to feed all the planted plants. Onions and garlic also need additional nutrition. Without this, it will not be possible to grow a good harvest.
Garlic dressing
You need to take care of feeding the garlic even before planting it. When I prepare a bed for this vegetable (a month before planting), I add humus, superphosphate, potassium sulfate and wood ash to the soil. Ash is especially good for the growth and development of garlic, he loves this fertilizer, which, along with nutrition, also deoxidizes the soil.
With the arrival of spring and until July, I carry out three more dressings.
How to fertilize garlic in April
This is the time of nitrogen fertilization when the plant is growing green mass. I use urea, or mullein infusion, or herb infusion.
Two weeks later I prepare food for garlic again. This time, phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are in effect. I use urea, potassium chloride, nitroammofosk.
What to use for nutrition of garlic in June
In the second half of June, a head of garlic forms, and it especially needs nutrients. I bring in superphosphate diluted with water and ash.
I don't use fresh manure, it's fatal for garlic. But I bring in ash every time I loosen the soil.
I also use foliar dressing as an addition to the main ones when the plant needs urgent help. Such nutrition works faster and more efficiently. I get up early in the morning, when the sun is not yet hot and there is no wind, and I walk along the garden bed with a spray. And even in the evening in calm weather, it is also possible.
Top dressing onions
Onions are a grateful culture; they respond to feeding with increased growth. This has been verified by me many times. I add nutrients only in the morning or in the evening. During the day, this can be done in cloudy weather. On the eve, or at least a couple of hours before, I water the beds with onions so that the fertilizer better penetrates the soil.
First feeding
The first feeding I spend about two weeks after planting, when the green arrow grows to 15-20 cm. I use nitrogen fertilizers, both organic (mullein, urea) and mineral (ammonium nitrate, superphosphate, potassium chloride). But I don't mix them, I choose one thing. The main thing here is not to overdo it. If you apply a little fertilizer, the feather will be pale, frail, and if it is more than normal, the greens will start to rage, and the head will form poorly.
After fertilizing, I water the onion, and then I do the loosening.
Second feeding
Three weeks after the first feeding of the vegetable, I apply phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. The simplest thing is to dilute 2 tablespoons of nitrophosphate in a bucket of water. This fertilizer contains everything you need. Potassium chloride, superphosphate, ammonium nitrate can also be used.
Superphosphate takes a long time to dissolve. In order for the plant to receive it on time, I prepare an extract.
It is not necessary to dissolve the ash in water, I just sprinkle the bed on top, and then spill it with water.
During this period, I exclude nitrogen fertilizers, as they delay the ripening of the bulbs and adversely affect the storage of the crop.
Third feeding
I spend the last feeding when the bulb reaches a diameter of 4-5 cm. Fertilization during this period is recommended on poor soils. If there is enough food in the ground, you can do without feeding. I use ash and superphosphate. Ash promotes head growth.
Whatever dressing you use, you must remember that each of them is carried out at one time and in a certain composition. Every season I get a good harvest of onions and garlic. Without additional nutrition, large vegetables are unlikely to grow on my land.
