Welcome to our channel for self-taught welding and locksmiths. Here we share simple working methods to help the weekend welder avoid many mistakes and shorten the time to achieve normal results.
There is such a welding method as spot welding, it is also called resistance welding. It is needed to connect two thin sheets of metal by welding them with points.
Two sheets of metal are pressed tightly against each other, welding non-combustible electrodes are brought from opposite sides of this joint, also pressing tightly. They give an electrical discharge, and a weld spot is obtained, which now connects these 2 sheets of metal.
The connection is very strong, there are no sagging and visible welds on the surface. This weld spot will be flush with the surface of the metal sheet.
This technique is used mainly in factories. Whoever saw small dots in the connection of body parts on their car, then this is precisely spot welding. Welding is great but requires special equipment.
But with an electrode it is quite possible to make a semblance of such spot welding in your garage; you do not need any special equipment. It is even possible to weld not only a sheet to a sheet, but also to weld a sheet to a frame from a corner or a shaped pipe.
Most experienced welders know this and apply it when necessary. This type of welding is called an electric rivet. The bottom line is this. We burn the upper sheet of metal with an electrode and immediately weld it to the lower one, or to the frame that lies at the bottom of the sheet.
You can do it more accurately, but the processing will take longer. We drill holes in the upper sheet, press it to the lower one or to the frame, and through these holes we also weld with an electrode. It turns out a weld point that securely holds these joints together.
Of course, after such welding, such an oval hat is obtained. But these bulges should be earned with a grinder and we will get the following result.
We grind the welded point flush with the metal and get the result no worse than factory spot welding! Strong connection without visible welding marks. So feel free to apply, having previously trained on unnecessary scraps of metal.
