I have been growing roses in open ground for a long time: I share my experience and recommendations that once helped me start

It is not for nothing that a magnificent rose is called the queen of the garden - this flower is able to decorate any piece of land. In order for a luxurious shrub to maintain a healthy appearance for many years and bloom profusely every season, it must be properly planted and provided with caring care.

Seedling selection

Today, rose seedlings are offered by flower growers, large specialized supermarkets and online stores. However, I prefer to purchase planting material in nurseries that are guaranteed to sell quality products. At the same time, I always carefully examine the plants for traces of diseases or pests.

Selecting a landing site

Rose bushes prefer areas open to sunlight, protected from cold winds. Perennials need a fertile, well-permeable soil for water and air. Clay soil should be diluted with sand and humus. And the sandy soil needs to be slightly weighted so that it retains moisture better. To do this, add a little clay and compost to it. Having chosen a suitable place, you can start planting a shrub.

Planting a rose bush

Luxurious, but very demanding culture needs careful care from the moment of landing in open ground:

  1. I prepare a hole for a rose bush in advance. In each well I add a mixture of humus, compost and high-moor peat with a small addition of mineral fertilizers (30 g of superphosphate and 20 g of potassium salt). If the soil in your area is acidic, add a couple of glasses of wood ash to it.
  2. Before planting, I cut the seedling with secateurs so that 2-3 buds remain on each shoot. If you purchased a plant with an open root system, then it can also be slightly shortened with sharp garden shears by 0.5-1 cm.
  3. I place a rose bush in a hole so that its roots are straightened, and the grafting site is 8-10 cm below the soil level. When all conditions are met, I fill the hole with soil and lightly tamp it down.
  4. In the near-stem zone of the bush I make a saucer-shaped recess and pour 10-15 liters of water into it. So that the water from the soil does not evaporate too quickly, I cover this place with a layer of mulch (5-7 cm). For this, cut grass, humus, peat or compost are suitable.

Until the plant finally takes root, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the soil and moisten it as necessary. You should not do this too often, because this culture does not like stagnant moisture, which can cause root rot.

Care rules

Do not plant a rose near trees that will shade it. The queen of the garden does not tolerate both drought and excess water. It is enough to pour 1.5-2 buckets of water under an adult bush once a week. And when the soil dries slightly, you need to remove the weeds and loosen the earth.

Three times a season I feed rose bushes with mineral fertilizers or an infusion made from weeds. In dry weather, I add mineral components to the water for irrigation, and in the rainy season I feed the flowering crop along the crown.

In early spring and late autumn, I prune dry and damaged shoots. After that, I treat the shrub with fungicides and insecticides to protect it from fungal infections and pests. After the first frosts, I insulate the root system and the crown of the bushes so that they can safely winter.

A luxurious plant for full development and flowering needs an abundance of light, moderate watering and fertile, loose soil. In addition, this perennial needs top dressing and annual pruning. Only in favorable conditions does the rose bush look healthy, well-groomed and bloom profusely.
