Today we will talk about seedlings of peppers. Growing it is quite problematic even for an experienced gardener, not to mention a beginner. Pepper is a very capricious crop that reacts sharply to any changes in the comfortable microclimate and care errors. Therefore, today I want to tell you what to pay attention to so as not to encounter difficulties when growing seedlings.
Why does the green mass turn yellow
If plants could talk, they would tell us what they don't like. And so, they have their own signals. One of these is the yellowing of the green mass. It is important that as soon as you notice such a change, immediately take action. Otherwise, young plants may die.
However, do not immediately worry: if you do everything right, and the leaves turn yellow anyway, this may be a manifestation of natural processes.
Pay attention to the nature of the location of the yellowness: if the middle and upper tiers of the leaves begin to turn yellow, you are faced with a serious problem.
Below I will tell you what serious problems this symptom can signal.
Incorrect development of the root system
The root system of peppers is rather weak and sensitive. This is especially true for young plants. Yellowing of the aboveground mass can be caused not only by the death of the roots, but also by their too intense growth. In this case, they are intertwined with each other, pinched, as a result of which the normal nutrition process is disturbed. It is important to remember about a weak root system when loosening, because it is at this moment that there is a risk of damaging it.
To check the condition of the roots, carefully remove the plant from the container and inspect the roots for discoloration (dark color indicates death of the roots)
In most cases, special root stimulants will help solve the problem.
nitrogen deficiency
Nitrogen is one of the most important elements that peppers need at the seedling stage for normal development. With a lack of nitrogen, it is urgent to feed the plants with the appropriate compounds. I consider urea or ammonium nitrate to be the best means for this task. To prepare a working solution, I dilute a tablespoon of urea in 10 liters of water, it is better if it is pre-settled.
Mistakes in care
And now we have reached the most large-scale section of the problems of growing pepper seedlings. There are a few key points to note here:
- Most often, the leaves turn yellow from temperature changes, or rather, when the temperature drops sharply. The critical mark for seedlings is 12 degrees with a plus sign. If the temperature drops below, young plants will completely wither.
- Illiterate watering is another common mistake. Water the seedlings only as the topsoil dries out. Only sprouting seedlings will have enough moisture once every five days. Adult seedlings are best watered every three days.
- Stress after transplanting into open ground. You will encounter such a problem if you transplant already overgrown seedlings. To save the plants, fertilize with mineral compounds and organic matter.
- Pests. Especially dangerous are aphids and mites, which can quickly lead to the death of young plants. Depending on the degree of damage, you can deal with the problem with the help of self-prepared folk remedies or special strong chemicals of the insecticidal group. If the choice is made in favor of the latter, be sure to strictly follow the instructions, because this type of drug is very aggressive. But the effect is tangible.
From my own experience, I can say that most problems with pepper seedlings are born from improper care. However, even if you have provided the necessary conditions, you should not relax. Regularly inspect your plants for pathologies, then you will be able to fix the problem in time.
