Tulips are very beautiful flowers and not that difficult to grow. However, they have their own subtleties when landing. I will tell you how I grow them.

What time to plant

When choosing timelines, I consider the following:

  • the best time for plants of the first season is from late March to mid-May;
  • the flood should go down, and the earth should dry out slightly: tulips are demanding on the level of moisture;
  • cannot be planted when strong winds blow, they dry up the earth and can blow the soil off the flower bed;
  • the temperature of the earth at a depth of 10 cm should be at least +9 ° C;
  • the air on average per day should warm up to +6 °C.

Otherwise, you need to focus on the properties of the tulip variety. Early varieties are planted in March, late - from April and later.

It is worth bearing in mind: whenever you plant tulips, it is pointless to wait for flowers before a month from planting.

How do I plant tulips?

Before planting bulbs, I do this:

  • I'm looking at planting material. Rotted, diseased, damaged bulbs during the winter definitely do not go to the garden. Sometimes I dig sick and damaged specimens along the road that goes past my site. If they sprout, it’s good, free landscaping and landscaping will be provided to the local administration, if they don’t sprout, it’s not a pity.
  • Before planting, I keep the bulbs for 10-12 hours in the refrigerator - this is stratification, it starts the mechanism for the development of the bulbs.
  • Before planting, I soak the bulbs for half an hour in a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
  • Before burying the tulip bulbs in the ground, I clean them from the husks and dead scales - this way they sprout faster.

Where to plant

Tulips can be planted after tulips - but not more than 4 years in a row. So I take into account where they grew up in years past. For the rest, I follow these rules:

  • The site should be well lit and warm.
  • The soil should be loose and neutral, so sometimes I put sand before planting, and in the fall I put lime: I have mostly acidic soil on the site.
  • The place for growing tulips should be protected from drafts and strong winds.

How to plant

I dig the selected area on a shovel bayonet. Additional fertilizers:

  • potassium sulfate - about 10 g per square meter of land;
  • compost - in the fall, about a bucket for the same area;
  • wood ash - as much as there is, it cannot be overdosed;
  • chalk - if the soil is highly acidic to balance the balance;
  • phosphate fertilizers - about 15 g per square meter of land.

I plant the bulbs themselves in holes with a depth of 7 to 20 cm (depending on the size of the bulb). I plant them in the old fashioned way using the “square-nested method”, that is, I mentally draw a bed on a grid in 10 cm increments and make holes at the intersections of the nodes.

I water according to soil moisture. If it is still wet after the flood, watering is not needed. If the weather is dry, then I pour about 0.5 liters per bulb. Sometimes I use a solution of potassium permanganate for watering, in which tulips were soaked, diluting it twice (so as not to poison the soil bacteria).

The landing itself looks like this:

  • at the bottom of the hole, I carefully place the bulb with the bottom down (this is extremely important: if the tulip is planted incorrectly, it will either not sprout, or it will bloom too late);
  • I sprinkle it with a nutrient substrate and slightly compact;
  • I water a little.

As a result, tulips grow well and amicably.

Conclusion

Growing tulips is not the most difficult gardening technique. If you don’t touch them, they will sprout themselves (once I accidentally dropped a bulb in a thicket of lilies of the valley and then for a couple of years I admired a lonely red tulip in a boil-white environment of lilies of the valley). However, if they are not cared for, the flowers will be few and not as beautiful.
