Each gardener has his favorite varieties of tomatoes that he plants from year to year, but sometimes you want to try something new. Today I will talk about the Banana red tomato variety. Let this be a new variety, but he already managed to fall in love with me.
Description and characteristics of the variety
The variety got its name for the similarity of tomatoes with the shape of bananas. These are early ripe tomatoes, the fruits ripen by 85 days after the appearance of the first shoots. The bushes are medium-sized - about 1.2 meters in height. The first racemes with 8-12 berries appear above the eighth leaf, and then through every pair of leaflets. I collected from 2.5 to 3.3 kilograms of tomatoes from each bush during the season, the weight of one fruit varied from 70 to 120 grams. Fresh-tasting fruits are stored for up to three months, but I use them for preservation and drying.
Growing conditions
Like other tomato varieties, Red Banana is demanding on good lighting. For successful seed germination, I maintain a temperature of +25 ° C and a humidity of 70%.
Soil treatment
I am always in favor of purchasing soil for seedlings. If this is not possible, you can prepare the soil mixture yourself. Mix one part of garden soil, humus and ash, add 2 parts of peat and half the dose of sand. The mixture is then calcined and disinfected. Properly prepared soil will be loose, breathable and moisture-intensive.
Seeding technology
I sow tomato seeds 2 months before planting in the garden. I cover the boxes with crops with glass or film and put them on a windowsill with good lighting; if there is not enough sun, a lamp should be used. Water as needed. The first sprouts should hatch in a week.
Seedling preparation
After the appearance of the first true leaves, I dive seedlings. A couple of weeks before planting in open ground, I begin to harden seedlings. Why do I take it out to the balcony every day. At first, she spends a couple of hours there, but gradually increase the time to a day. For a week I also reduce watering, which improves the cold resistance of plants.
Planting seedlings in a permanent place
You can plant bushes on the garden bed when the danger of night frosts has passed. In the garden, I dig holes 1.5-2 centimeters deep. The distance between them I leave about 30 centimeters. After planting, I water the plants with warm water. I immediately install plastic arcs around the beds, on which I stretch a transparent film.
Features of caring for tomatoes
Seedlings do not require special care. Tomatoes need to be properly watered, cut, tied up and fertilized.
Fertilizer
I apply minerals under tomatoes every 2 weeks during watering. I buy ready-made compositions in stores for gardeners and gardeners.
Watering
When watering, make sure that water does not get on the leaves. It is better to irrigate plants in the morning or in the evening. The frequency of watering depends on the condition of the earthy coma.
Bush tying
You can tie a bush in several ways:
- on a support - I add a wooden peg about 1.5 meters long to each bush, and as I grow, I fix the stem with nylon ribbons;
- trellis - at the ends of the beds, poles are installed, to which tomatoes are tied at the top.
Weeding
It is easier to eliminate weeds after watering, when the ground is moist. I also prefer to mulch the beds with hay, sawdust or buckwheat husks.
Weather and disease resistance
This variety is quite hardy, not afraid of temperature changes and temporary drought. The plant is immune to fusarium, late blight and tobacco mosaic. However, without prevention, it can become ill with cladosporiosis.
Variety Banana red ripens early, unpretentious and pleases with good harvests. The fruits are stored for up to three months, but it is better to use them in preservation, and not fresh.
