In many suburban areas you can see pumpkin plantings. Its pulp is used in cooking. I also grow pumpkins. Two years ago, a friend shared the seeds of a gymnosperm vegetable crop. Now I’ll talk about the features of growing plants on the site.
Characteristics of the variety
The gymnospermous pumpkin does not have a hard shell on the seeds.
The fruits are round, flattened. Average weight up to 5 kg. The color of the surface, depending on the variety, can be green, red, yellow. The rind is thin but very hard. Seeds of medium size, covered with a yellowish film, no husk.
The root system is powerful and long. Peduncle faceted shape with the presence of deep grooves.
Planting and cultivation
Planting hard-barked pumpkin seeds is carried out in almost the same way as other varieties. However, it is worth paying attention to some features, which I will discuss in more detail.
Soil and crop rotation
The plant develops better in the beds, where cabbage, potatoes, onions grew before. You can not plant pumpkins after carrots, tomatoes, zucchini, since these crops are damaged by the same infections and are attacked by the same parasites. Choose a fertile soil for planting.
In one area, it is recommended to grow a vegetable only once every three to four years, since the pumpkin greatly depletes the soil.
Suitable Conditions
For planting pumpkins, I choose well-lit, sunny places. The vegetable does not tolerate drafts. A favorable temperature for growing is considered to be no more than +25 ° C. Culture loves moist soil.
Features of sowing seeds
Before planting, I select the best seeds: without damage and without the presence of mold. I disinfect in a solution of potassium permanganate (1%) for 15 minutes. Then I wash and dry them. In order for the seeds to sprout better, I process them in the Epin solution.
Seeds are best planted in peat containers or tablets, as seedlings are difficult to transplant.
Before sowing, the swollen seeds are dried under the sun. The finished substrate can be purchased at the store or prepared independently from rotted sawdust (1 part), peat (2 parts) and leaf humus (1 part).
I cover the containers with landings with a film and put them in a bright place.
seedling care
When shoots appear, the temperature in the room should be no more than +15 ° C.
Watering is carried out as needed: as soon as the top layer of soil dries.
After a week and a half, I feed the seedlings with a solution of nitrophoska (15 g / bucket of water).
Planting seedlings in the soil
Landing in the ground is carried out in the evening or in cloudy weather.
Boarding process:
- Pour humus into the prepared holes, place the seedlings in a peat pot, after destroying the walls, sprinkle with earth.
- Pour the warm liquid over the sprouts.
- The first days the seedlings should be shaded.
plant care
For the plant, it is necessary to organize high-quality care:
- Watering and feeding. Plants are watered regularly, the soil should not be dry.
Starting from the tenth day after disembarkation, fertilize with an interval of two weeks. At the same time, mineral fertilizers alternate with organic matter. - The soil. Carry out loosening and weeding from weeds.
- Bush formation. Perform pinching of the lateral stems, leaving one stem. When forming fruits on one plant, five vegetables should be left, and the rest should be removed.
- Some difficulties in cultivation. Plants can be damaged by diseases that need to be detected in time and dealt with with the help of various drugs.
Thus, cultivating a gymnospermous gourd is not so difficult. The main thing is to strictly follow the basic recommendations for care and take timely measures when diseases appear, as well as regularly treat harmful insects.
