When planting beds in the garden, it is important to observe not only the rules of crop rotation, but also to choose the right neighbors. In the greenhouse, space is limited, and vegetables are often located close to each other, so it is necessary to choose the right neighbors for peppers.
Co-location
The choice of suitable neighboring crops contributes not only to an increase in yield, but also has a beneficial effect on development, repels pests. When choosing partners, I always focus on the following facts:
- growing season;
- crop height;
- growing conditions (plant requirements for lighting, humidity, temperature).
Planting vegetables or herbs that match each other allows me to save energy, time and care costs.
Suitable neighbors
Pepper is a capricious culture that reacts sharply to any adverse factors. Decades of observations have made it possible to select the optimal neighbors for co-cultivation.
tomatoes
Peppers and tomatoes are representatives of the nightshade family, so I calmly plant them in the neighborhood. Plants require the same care, they need the same soil composition.
There is also a minus of such placement of vegetables - crops have the same diseases and pests. To avoid mass infections, I recommend planting each species in a checkerboard pattern.
cucumbers
They are neutral neighbors. They are not able to harm the pepper, they will not infect it with diseases. The root system of cucumbers is located at a different level, which means that the culture will not fight with pepper for nutrients.
The only inconvenience will be watering. Cucumbers need high humidity, but peppers do not tolerate it.
eggplant
I believe that eggplants are not only possible, but also necessary to be planted nearby for a number of reasons:
- Same maturity.
- Same growing conditions.
- Planting crops is carried out at the same time.
When planting eggplants and peppers together, regular ventilation of the greenhouse is required. The distance between plants is about 50 cm.
Also, next to the pepper, you can plant any plants from the list below:
- onion;
- zucchini;
- corn;
- garlic;
- salad;
- carrot;
- basil.
Greens can be placed on the sides of the beds, other crops at a minimum distance of 40 cm.
Cultures to Avoid
A number of plants negatively affect the development of pepper. The aroma of fennel can even completely destroy the planting. Legumes should not be chosen as neighbors, their development requires a support, for the role of which they will determine neighboring plantings. As a result, the weight of peas or beans will break the bushes. Beets, during intensive growth, will completely suppress the root system of pepper, which will begin to weaken and wither.
You should never plant sweet and hot peppers in the neighborhood. Cross-pollination of these varieties will result in loss of palatability of both species. The minimum distance between them should be 15 m.
Growing peppers in a greenhouse, along with other crops, is a solution that helps save space in the beds and makes it easier to care for crops. The main thing is to choose suitable neighbors so as not to ruin the culture in the bud.
Share in the comments your experience of co-growing peppers with other crops. Are there any other suitable candidates in your opinion, and who should definitely be avoided?
