Many gardeners prefer to plant varieties of tomatoes with large fruits. After all, large tomatoes are always very fleshy, juicy and sweet. They just melt in your mouth, so they are great for eating fresh. These varieties include the Giant Novikova, which I will tell you about later.
Briefly about the history of the variety
Tomato is a product of the selection school in Russia. It was bred by amateur plant grower A. Novikov. The variety was registered in 1990, but never entered the State Register. Despite this, Novikov's Giant remains one of the favorites in domestic horticulture.
Characteristics of culture
The plant is of indeterminate type, reaches a height of 2 m. The stems are thin, the leaves are ordinary tomato-type with a fibrous surface. The variety can be grown both in greenhouses and in unprotected soil, but in greenhouse conditions the culture produces less abundant crops.
Fruiting
Practically on each brush of the bush 4-5 fruits are formed. On average, the mass of each of them reaches 500-600 g, due to which up to 4 kg of tomatoes can be removed from one bush. But with proper care, experienced gardeners collect 6-9 kg each.
Description of the fruit
Ripe tomatoes have a rich pink color. The shape is rounded flattened, the surface is ribbed. The skin is thin and can sometimes crack. The maximum weight of a tomato is 1.3 kg.
Positive and negative characteristics of the variety
Growing this culture, I noted the following advantages:
- large size tomatoes;
- rich tomato aroma and excellent taste;
- high resistance to infections and harmful insects;
- drought resistance;
- good transportability, if you pick tomatoes a little unripe.
Among the disadvantages are:
- due to their large size, tomatoes are not suitable for conservation;
- when mature, they are not stored for long, since the skin is rather thin;
- the variety does not tolerate temperature changes;
- nutrient soil is needed.
Agricultural rules
It is necessary to plant tomatoes for seedlings in such a way that by the time they are transplanted to a permanent place, the seedlings are already 80-90 days old. Then there is a chance to get a crop in 1-1.5 months. In order for tomatoes to grow large, adhere to the following feeding rules:
- Nitrogen-containing preparations can be applied only before the opening of the first flower brush. I usually feed the plants a week after planting the plants in the beds.
- At the beginning of flowering, add superphosphate, potassium monophosphate or special mixtures designed for tomatoes.
- During the fruiting period, organic matter and nitrogen-containing mineral fertilizers cannot be applied. This will significantly reduce the size of the fruit.
To increase fruiting, you still need to master the technique of forming a bush. Remove stepchildren until the first flower brush is formed. Above it, leave one side shoot if you lead a bush in two stems. Remove the rest of the growth regularly.
Conclusion
Giant Novikov's tomatoes are large and very tasty. It is worth trying to grow them, even if you are a beginner gardener. There is nothing difficult in this. The main thing is to feed the bushes in a timely manner. If you have any questions or want to add something, write in the comments.
