Stages of pepper ripening
If desired, peppers can be plucked ahead of time. Unripe vegetables are also very tasty. It must be remembered that pepper, removed from the bush ahead of time, is not stored for a long time.
There are 2 types of pepper maturity:
- technical. The second name is harvest maturity. From the moment the ovaries appear to harvest maturity, 1.5 months should pass. The fruits do not yet have varietal properties, but the pepper is ready to eat. From it you can cook salads for the winter;
- biological. The fruits acquire their color and seeds appear. Pepper is saturated with nutrients and trace elements. The fruits are more useful.
Pepper does not turn red: the main reasons
Large peppers do not always turn red. There are several reasons why fruits do not ripen. The cause must be found in order to take action.
Climate
Some summer residents grow pepper on their plots from seeds that were obtained from store-bought vegetables. The fact is that vegetables are brought to the store from southern countries. And in our regions there is no way to get pepper with similar qualities, given the natural growing conditions. Vegetables from Egypt, Turkey and the Krasnodar Territory are not suitable for regions of Russia with cool summers. Vegetables simply do not have time to ripen.
Variety features
Before buying seeds, you need to familiarize yourself with the varietal characteristics of pepper. There are green, purple and brown peppers. When ripe, it does not turn red. These include: Viking, Zephyr, Green Wonder. These varieties are green.
Ripening period
You need to know exactly how long the pepper ripens. If this is a late variety, then it may turn red later than the others. Early types of pepper are removed from the bushes 3 months after planting, and late varieties - only after 5 months.
Temperature
At a temperature of 8 to 30 degrees, the pepper grows and ripens well. If the weather is cool, then the pepper stops growing. A heat-loving vegetable does not tolerate extreme heat. At 35 degrees above zero, the bushes begin to dry out.
Lighting
Peppers need light for at least 12 and no more than 14 hours. Otherwise, the ripening of vegetables is disturbed.
Watering
Pepper needs watering with warm and settled water. You need to water under the root, avoiding water on the leaves and stem.
planting density
When the plantings are thickened, the peppers do not turn red for a long time. They lack nutrients. They do not receive enough light due to the fact that they are planted close to each other.
Wrong agricultural practices
Sometimes an inexperienced gardener can make such errors in agricultural technology that they lead to a delay in ripening.
Helpful Hints
- To make the pepper ripen faster, it should be removed from the garden more often. It is very important to remove the first fruits so that subsequent peppers sing faster.
- You can spread banana peels near pepper bushes. It contains ethylene, which will accelerate the ripening of fruits.
- By the end of the garden season, when the temperature drops, it is worth picking off small peppers, leaving the largest vegetables on the bushes. Small peppers will not have time to ripen. The forces of the plant will be directed to large fruits.
- Do not violate agricultural technology and peppers will reach their biological ripeness. You can also ripen them at home.
