To grow a bountiful crop of tomatoes, you need to know how to feed them. In this article, I will share with you my personal experience of how I fertilize tomatoes with iodine, ash and boric acid.
Benefits of top dressing for tomatoes in the form of ash, iodine and boric acid
I always use boron, ash and iodine to fertilize tomatoes:
- Iodine promotes better metabolism. It increases productivity, nourishes plants with useful elements, improves the resistance of tomatoes to various diseases.
- Boron contributes to the long storage of tomatoes and makes them sweeter. In the absence of boric acid in tomatoes, drying of the top, discoloration of foliage, shedding of branches is observed.
- Ash (wood, not coal) contributes to the formation of a strong root system and is responsible for the development of fruits.
Fertilizer preparation methods
When preparing fertilizers, I use the following proportions:
- 1 teaspoon of boric acid;
- 2 tablespoons wood ash
- 30 drops of iodine.
All ingredients should be well dissolved and mixed.
When to contribute?
The first time I feed tomatoes is when they are grown in cups. This contributes to the growth of green mass. Then I apply top dressing during the formation of the ovaries. And the third time the tomatoes are fertilized during the period of active fruiting.
Feeding methods
I always use two proven fertilizing methods:
- under the root;
- by foliage.
Foliar spraying is useful for seedlings that have at least two leaves. They are sprayed on both sides. The solution is sprayed so that the seedlings are well wetted.
Root top dressing is considered more effective, since fertilizers reach the plant faster through the root system. Under one bush, I pour half a liter of the prepared solution.
Helpful Hints
If you want your tomatoes to grow well and bring many tasty and healthy fruits, study what experienced gardeners advise:
- Any top dressing for tomatoes is introduced in dry, but cloudy weather. It can also be applied early in the morning or in the evening after sunset. But it is not recommended to fertilize garden crops during the day, as burns from the sun may remain on the leaves.
- Before applying root dressing, tomato bushes must be plentifully watered with warm water. Otherwise, you can get burns of the root system.
- Tomatoes need to be fertilized no more than once every two weeks.
- Boron, iodine and ash are applied as a fertilizer for tomatoes no more than three times during the summer.
As can be seen from everything I have described, boric acid, iodine and ordinary wood ash nourish tomatoes with almost all the necessary trace elements. If you apply them correctly, you can not only increase the immunity of vegetable crops, but also increase productivity.
