Successful cultivation of tomatoes in a summer cottage requires certain knowledge of agricultural technology. It is important not only to plant correctly, but also to grow plants. One of the mandatory rules is maintaining the distance between the bushes. Now I will talk about these and other nuances in more detail.
Why is it important to keep the distance between the tomatoes?
Culture for normal growth and development needs a sufficient amount of light and nutrients. In thickened plantings, plants begin to compete for these factors. They stretch, the stems become thinner, the tomatoes wither.
In addition, maintaining a distance will help to avoid problems such as:
- Insufficient ventilation of the bushes.
- Increased humidity.
- The appearance and development of rot, fungal infections.
- Fight for light, water and food.
- Lack of ties.
Fruits also need light for normal ripening. Otherwise, the buds fall off, the fruits are formed small, with low taste.
The distance between plants depends on the characteristics of their structure.
Tall varieties
I like taller varieties because they take up less space, but still produce a large amount of yield. They are unpretentious in care, highly resistant to weather extremes and are great for planting in open ground.
I plant such plants at a distance of 50 cm from each other, and between the beds I keep 70 cm.
Tall varieties definitely need a garter to a support, since during the period of active fruiting the trunk may break.

- Midas.

I plant them a little closer to each other:
- between plants I leave 55 cm;
- between beds 65 cm.
So the bushes have enough light, and they actively bear fruit. Subject to all the rules of agricultural technology, I was able to collect up to 8 kg of large, bright fruits with high palatability from one plant.
Among the medium-sized varieties, I liked the most:
- Andromeda;
- Pink flamingo;
- Danko;
- Wonderful lady.
Harvest is used for cooking various dishes, as well as conservation.
Undersized
These varieties tend to produce an early harvest and are excellent for indoor cultivation.
I dig planting holes at a distance of 40-45 cm in a checkerboard pattern. This scheme has a number of advantages:
- Plants receive enough light, water and nutrients.
- Well ventilated.
- Lots of ties.
- The fruits ripen evenly, with high taste qualities.
- Harvest is easy to harvest.
With this scheme, from each bush I collect at least 3 kg of tasty, juicy fruits, ideal for eating fresh.
From low-growing varieties, I choose these:
- Pink honey;
- Gull;
- Mystery.
What else to look for when growing tomatoes
To get a high yield of bright, sweet tomatoes, it is important to choose the right planting site.
Culture prefers:
- Loose and fertile soil with a neutral acidity index.
- Good lighting, but direct sunlight at noon on the leaves is unacceptable, as it can cause a burn.
I pre-prepare the site by digging a shovel on a bayonet and carefully choosing plant debris.
I add mineral and organic fertilizers.
In the spring, I disinfect by spraying 3% Bordeaux liquid.
I grow tomatoes both outdoors and indoors, following the rules of care:
- Timely watering.
- Application of fertilizers.
- Pest control.
- Soil loosening.
