Some gardeners believe that to maintain a beautiful lawn, it is enough to cultivate the soil, sow grass, and then water it in a timely manner. However, in practice, not everything is so simple.
In order to enjoy the attractive view of lush grass season after season, lawn work should begin at the very beginning of the spring season. Below I will talk about the main actions that are necessary to maintain the health and beauty of the lawn.
Spring lawn mowing
Mowing is an essential step in lawn care. Even if you did a thorough autumn cleaning, last year's grass, fallen leaves and other plant debris still remain on the lawn. All these residues not only spoil the aesthetic component, but also prevent fresh grass from fully breathing and consuming moisture. In addition, pests can find shelter in plant debris, which will cause a serious crown to your cover. It is combing that will completely rid the lawn of all that is superfluous.
If your lawn is small, you can cope with combing with a conventional fan rake. Rake with regular teeth should not be used, because they can seriously damage the young grass.
On the shelves of garden centers today you can find a wide range of devices for convenient lawn mowing.
The technology of proper combing has its own subtleties: first you need to walk along, then across, and then comb the lawn diagonally on both sides.
Spring lawn aeration
This procedure is simply necessary to maintain proper air exchange. Aeration can be done by cutting furrows with a special cutter. Alternatively, piercing the site can be performed.
The correct depth of aeration is about eight centimeters.
Some gardeners prefer to simply pierce the lawn with a pitchfork or special spiked shoes. However, this approach is logical to practice only in areas of a small area.
For large areas, you can purchase a special aerator. The device is a drum with spikes that must be pushed forward. Models differ in constructive solutions. The aerator can be mechanical. The operation of the device in this case is ensured by the presence of an electric or gasoline engine. Other models require human effort.
Aeration must be done annually.
Spring lawn fertilizing
After combing and aerating, the lawn should be fed with nutrient formulations. For one season it is worth spending at least three dressings.
For good nutrition, you must adhere to the following rules:
- In early spring, fertilize with a high nitrogen content. This element is able to stimulate the rapid growth of green mass. As an effective fertilizer, I use ammonium nitrate.
- Closer to the middle of the summer season, fertilizers with a high content of potassium and phosphorus should be preferred. Phosphorus is essential for maintaining the proper development of the root system, and potassium increases the resistance of plants to diseases.
- By the end of the growing season, the amount of nitrogen should be reduced.
Fertilizers can be applied both dry and fresh. In any case, try to apply the formulations as evenly as possible, and also strictly observe the recommended dosages.
Do not forget that before applying dry fertilizers, the lawn must be moistened.
