I cannot say that I am a major specialist in all issues that arise during the repair or construction of a summer house or a country house. However, the years of owning a summer cottage, and later my own house, taught me some tricks for parts of carpentry and joinery, the basics and practical application of work with electricity and the similar.
I have never hidden my skill and I am always ready to suggest or show my friends - neighbors how to do what they do not know or do not know how, if, of course, they turn to me.
And recently, walking along the street of our town, I first heard, and then I saw a neighbor Alexander, who, in vivid and not entirely censorship terms, expressed his opinion about some ongoing them works.
We have the most cordial relations with our neighbor, so I could not pass by and asked what excited him so much. It turns out that his mood was spoiled by ordinary glass, which he repeatedly tried to cut into pieces of a certain size.
In a conversation where most of the words cannot be put on paper, the neighbor said that for more than one hour he has been trying to cut the glass evenly, but all his attempts have ended in failure. A significant number of glass sheets have already been damaged, a lot of time has been spent and, most importantly, nerves, which, as you know, are not restored. Of course, I could not pass by without providing all possible assistance, especially since this task is familiar to me.
I immediately asked a neighbor to show me his technique for cutting a sheet of glass. The neighbor took a glass cutter, scratched the glass and started tap the incision site on the opposite side. Everything became clear to me.
This cutting technique is a gross mistake. Tapping the cut line leads to the occurrence of chips and when trying to separate the cut parts, the glass breaks not along the desired line, but in the vast majority of cases, completely arbitrarily.
- So, the first thing my neighbor needs to do is stop this tapping. The second, no less important, is to work with the right glass cutter. Personally, I use a roller oil glass cutter. It is much better than conventional glass cutters and has a lot of advantages in relation to standard glass cutting tools.
- The object to be cut must first be prepared. The glass must be clean, at least the intended cut line must be clean, which must be wiped before cutting. To work, you must use a straight rail or ruler, on which you need to stick pieces of rubber so that it does not slide on the glass.
- The pressure on the glass cutter should not be strong, the applied force should be uniform throughout the entire length of the cut. I usually do not more than 2 mm indent from the edge. The glass cutter should slide off the end of the sheet.
- If a conventional glass cutter is used, then it must be located strictly perpendicular to the glass. It is better to pre-lubricate the roller with oil or kerosene.
Working with an oil glass cutter is much easier. The roller is automatically lubricated with oil, the spring mechanism makes the process pleasant and not difficult. In practice, the work is similar to drawing on a sheet with an ordinary pencil, and the pressing force is about the same.
After making the cut, the glass is taken by hand from both sides and decisively, but carefully, breaks. In this case, the fault line will be smooth and clean. It is not recommended to take glass with bare hands, it is necessary to use strong gloves.
It can be difficult to simply break thick glass with your hands, so something suitable in size, for example, a screwdriver, is placed under the cut line.
That's all the subtleties, the use of which gives an excellent result.
