Wind generator: why they always have three blades, not four or five

Even though wind turbines are far from the most popular source of energy in the domestic space, it is still difficult to find a person who has never seen such an installation. At the same time, everyone had to pay attention in one way or another to the fact that wind turbines always have three blades. A fair question arises: why exactly so many, and not less or not more?

In fact, everything is not as simple as it seems at first glance. In fact, there are many types of wind turbines. People quite actively use both the two-blade design and the four-blade design. However, the 3-blade design of the wind generator has taken root in the industry mainly. The main reason for this lies in physics.

In general, we can say that the 3-blade wind turbine design is a compromise. The choice of the number of blades depends on the ratio of the torque and the speed of rotation of the blades of the installation. Specifically, in this case, the torque is a physical quantity that reflects the force of the wind on the generator rotor. In simple terms: the number of blades is directly related to the efficiency of the generator and the speed of its rotation. The higher the torque, the better.

The result is that wind turbines with two blades rotate too fast, but they give little torque, which means they produce little electricity. The only advantage of such installations is that they can work even in the lightest wind. Generators with four blades rotate very slowly, but they give noticeably more torque, and at the same time energy. However, these can work effectively only with the strongest wind. Worse, the torque boost of the 4-blade generator is not high enough compared to the 3-blade model.

So it turns out that a wind generator with 3 blades is the golden mean. This gives enough energy, has a high torque and an acceptable rotation speed. Works equally well in both light and strong winds. At the same time, it does not lose its effectiveness due to the irrationally increased mass of the bladed mechanism.
