How to easily chrome metal at home

The sparkling chrome layer not only makes parts and tools very beautiful. Much more important is that it allows you to protect metal products from the harmful effects of corrosion. It may seem that chrome plating is some kind of very complicated procedure. Actually - yes! But this does not mean at all that most owners and craftsmen will not be able to implement it, including at home (garage) conditions.

What you need: table vinegar 9%, edible salt, powder detergent, stainless steel, direct current source

So, the first step is to find or make your own two ferritic-chromium stainless steel electrodes. And yes, it is from them that chromium will be taken in the future. It should be noted that this material is not attracted by a magnet. You can even make electrodes from some old spoons. If there are no unnecessary spoons, then you can cut the electrode yourself from any strip of suitable metal. Also, for convenience, it is recommended to immediately drill holes in the electrodes for the wires.

Next, we take a glass container and pour enough vinegar into it so that the part being chrome-plated can be completely immersed in the composition. Next, salt is added to the vinegar at the rate of one handful per 0.5 liters of the composition. The next step is the manufacture of a dielectric insert. You can make it from a food container or bottle. The cut-out insert is placed between the electrodes to protect against short circuits.

We connect the power to the electrodes lowered into the composition. We wait until the electrolyte becomes black. Turn off the power, drain the composition with filtering through cotton wool. Next, we prepare the part for chrome plating: we clean, wash, dry, degrease. Be sure to remove any defects from the part. We prepare a solution of water and powder detergent, after which we must thoroughly wash the part in it again.

The filtered black electrolyte is poured into a glass container, in which it is heated to 60-95 C. Further, a stainless steel electrode and a part for chromium plating are dipped into the electrolyte. A “minus” is connected to the electrode, and a “plus” is connected to the workpiece. The further speed of chromium plating depends on the power of the transformer used.
