After some time, he tried to sell it, but there was a client (Billy checked him for a very long time) who offered joint ownership, in which the island was until 2019. (then Milliken bought out part of the co-owner).
“Over the years we have shared the island with his friends, our mutual friends and just random people, Milliken says. - We never charged a single cent for staying on the island. We enjoyed the beauty and solitude and were heartily glad that others share our views on nature, fascinating surroundings and life on a desert island.
It should be noted that in 2009 the shack was turned into a well-maintained and furnished cottage, located away from the water to avoid flooding. The house itself stands on stilts, which has saved it over the years from water entering the premises.
The house on a desert island has only two open spaces. On the lower level there is a spacious living room with comfortable armchairs, a dining area and a small kitchenette that allows you to prepare meals for the whole company. There is a sleeping area on the mezzanine, which can only be reached by a ladder.
The living space is completely finished with wood, which makes it cozy and warm, but large windows let in a lot of sunlight. light, provide a breathtaking 360-degree view of the vast blue waters of the bay and give you the opportunity to admire the rookery seals. If we talk about modern amenities, they are absent. There is no running water or sewage in the house, which means that there is no bath and the toilet is located outside. The only thing is that in the summer you can install a shower, the water of which will be heated by the sun.
Thanks to the 2500 W generator, which comes with a 3.7 liter gas bottle, the house has electricity. True, the gas is only enough for 8 hours of continuous operation of the generator, but you can stock up on several cylinders if you plan a long stay. Despite the fact that there is mobile communication on the island, the owner initially banned the use of phones, so all guests leave them on the shore.
By the way, despite the fact that the island is uninhabited and the wooden cottage offers a peaceful, isolated life, it is just a short boat ride from Addison and Jones Port, two mainland cities in the state Maine.
Interesting fact: When Billy Milliken's daughter came to him with her boyfriend and said that he had proposed to her, the father did not gave a blessing, but set the only condition that they had to fulfill if they wanted to be together. Before thinking about marriage, the couple needed to live together for a while on the island of Duck Ledges. "Life on a desert island was supposed to either bring them together or break them," the father argued. His daughter and her boyfriend passed the test with flying colours, and with Millikan's blessing, got married last year. In July he is expecting a grandson.
Since Billy has not paid enough attention to the island for the past two years, which he considers “totally unfair to this charming place”, he decided to sell it by all the rules. Since the fall of last year, Duck Ledges Island has been put up for sale, but the deal could not take place for several reasons.
