Today, the “those” construction battalions that were in the Russian army during the Soviet Union no longer exist. A significant part of the duties of construction battalions and detachments has been completely shifted to date to private civilian or paramilitary structures that work under contract with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. But back to the construction battalions: why didn’t Soviet conscripts rush there?

«And I personally go to the army for free, gain health and knowledge"- film "DMB"

There were evaders from military service in Soviet times as well. However, in general, the idea was brought up in society that every citizen must be able to defend his homeland. In the 1930s and 1940s, this rule also applied to girls, albeit to a much lesser extent than to young boys. However, by the 1980s, ideas about military service in society were slowly mutating into an absolutely vulgar “if you didn’t serve, not a man”, which is why in the 1990s against the backdrop of the collapse of the country, ideology and economy, there was exactly one step left before the start of the complete denial of military service by society as an honorable duty citizen. However, even in the best Soviet years, young people for the most part were not eager to get into the so-called "construction battalions".

In fact, the name "Stroybat" is unofficial, popular. It will be correct to call them VSO or Military Construction Detachments. Their tasks included preparing infrastructure and communications for the army both in peacetime and in wartime. Also, the duties of the WSO included the construction of fortifications. As you might guess, service in the VZO was extremely weakly connected with military craft. The name "Stroybat" speaks for itself. The first and most important thing that conscripts did there was construction work for the needs of the army. Is it necessary to say that ordinary soldiers got the most difficult, routine and dirty part of the work? In fact, no one was eager to “work” for free (it’s even strange!).

In addition, there was another important reason why the Soviet guys did not rush into construction battalions. The fact is that around these units there was a halo of rather gloomy glory. This is because, first of all, the draft boards sent all “alcoholics and parasites” there. This, of course, is a joke, but the concentration of young people with criminal "merits", as well as guys from dysfunctional families, in the WZO has been enough throughout the history of the country. Is it necessary to say that such a "contingent" a priori created not the most comfortable environment for yesterday's children from good bedrooms? Of course, popular rumor (as it always happens) tenfold exaggerated the gloomy glory of the building parts, which further aggravated the situation.

Why did they put a mysterious “umbrella” on the cannon of the Soviet T-62 tank
