Soviet secret projects have always required special conditions and infrastructure. And often it was necessary for this to remain silent about the existence of entire cities. There were many such settlements throughout the Union, but they could not be found on the then maps - the placement of objects there of national importance made them inaccessible to most people, and those who lived there themselves found themselves under the heading "secret". Your attention is the "five" of the secret Soviet cities that were not on the maps.
1. Zagorsk-6
In this city, located in Sergiev Posad, in the Soviet period they were engaged in the development of bacteriological weapons on the basis of the Virological Center of the Research Institute of Microbiology. And the impetus for the creation of this structure was an outbreak of smallpox, which happened in 1959 after the arrival of a group of guests from India. It was precisely such a bacteriological weapon, based on the variola virus, known as India-1, that was developed in Zagorsk-6. Further, they were engaged in the creation of deadly weapons based on South American and African viruses, among which is the now world-famous Ebola hemorrhagic fever. Therefore, it is not surprising that the employees and residents of the city were checked by the special services to the maximum so that there were no ambiguous episodes in his biography. The secret status of Zagorsk-6 has not been removed so far.
2. Zagorsk-7
Zagorsk-7, sometimes referred to as the twin city of Zagorsk-6, lost its closed city status in 2001. And this despite the fact that Soviet specialists developed radioactive weapons there, including on the basis of the Central Institute of Physics and Technology of the USSR Ministry of Defense, which still exists today. Zagorsk-7 was a prime example of the fact that the standard of living in the secret settlements of the USSR was higher than in most other places. For example, there was no shortage, and this encouraged the inhabitants of nearby villages, despite the strict control of the territory of the closed city, regularly tried to replenish their food supplies there.
3. Arzamas-16
The creation of the first Soviet atomic bomb was carried out on a specially built for this secret object called KB-11, which was deployed on the site of the village of Sarov, later known as Arzamas-16. But he had several more names - Kremlev, Arzamas-75, Gorky-130). The level of restrictions and the enhanced security regime were so high that Arzamas-16 was surrounded by two rows around the entire perimeter. barbed wire, and the employees of KB-11 and their families were not able to freely leave the restricted area even during holidays. Later, some concessions were made, but the standard of living there was close to the desired socialism. Arzamas-16 has the status of a closed city to this day.

4. Sverdlovsk-45
The city of Sverdlovsk-45 was literally built around plant No. 814, which specializes in uranium enrichment, by the forces of Gulag prisoners and even, according to Novate.ru, Moscow students. The city is characterized by orderliness and characteristic "squareness" of development due to the overall compactness of the settlement. Sometimes it was called "Little Peter", especially since the standard of living there was very good, albeit inferior in terms of supply to the aforementioned Arzamas-16. Today Sverdlovsk-45 is called Lesnoy and still remains a secret city.
5. Peaceful
Mirny was originally an ordinary military town in the Arkhangelsk region, until in 1966 it was transformed into a closed city. This decision was made due to the Plesetsk test cosmodrome located nearby, but at the same time, the level of secrecy of Mirny was lower than most other Soviet ZATOs: the city was not fenced with barbed wire, and sometimes there could be lost mushroom pickers or illegal immigrants entering the city for scarce goods. Mirny still retains the status of a closed city.
