That it is not recommended to put in the compost

  • Dec 27, 2019

Many gardeners are accustomed to the fact that in the compost pit can throw any garden and food waste. But it's not right. Adding compost "forbidden" foods can contaminate the ground and find a variety of other troubles.

In this article, I have compiled a list of what is best never to throw in the compost.

1. Plant potatoes, tomatoes and cucumbers

Plant potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, and eggplant may be contaminated with diseases such as late blight. In autumn distinguish healthy from diseased withered tops is very difficult. It is easy to miss a few of infected branches, resulting in an instantaneous spread of the disease.

Late blight, as well as some other similar diseases, perfectly conveys the ground and spreads over the site together with humus. That is why the tops is better to use as raw material for the creation of ash or even take away from the site.

2. rotten apples

If Apple's great, it does not represent any danger to the compost pit. Only here the healthy fruit will not throw anybody. The compost is only rot, but it just might be dangerous. Old and rotten apples are often infected with scab - a dangerous fungal disease that spreads easily and affects many horticultural crops.

Further diseases apples attract mice whose appearance is usually a good audio than ends.

3. Fruits with a large bone

Fruit with a very large bone, such as plum, almost useless in a compost pit. Small flesh decomposes rapidly, but the bones themselves almost do not rot. They may lie in the compost for years without any major changes.

4. Old bread

Old bread, a loaf of bread and other flour products can not be put into compost for two reasons.

First, they attract mice, moles and shrews. Which, in turn, destroy the beneficial worms, and harmful to the site.

Secondly, covered with mold, bread is able to infect the plants and the soil fungus diseases that can spread throughout the site in the future.

5. bones

Any bones of birds and animals badly decomposed and only add weight. Fish bones rot a little better, but the benefits of compost bring not much. Therefore, there is no sense to send out to the compost pit.

6. weeds

Any weeds survive well and spread over the area, even from a compost pit. Their seeds are dispersed by wind, and the roots grow into the ground.

Sending the weeds in the compost, you risk to create favorable conditions for their reproduction and development.

Compliance with these simple rules will provide a healthy and fertile soil without the risk of contamination of horticultural crops.
