A neighbor told what to do if the leaves of the beets suddenly turned red

  • Dec 10, 2020

Rarely does anyone have a home garden without beets. The vegetable is unpretentious to grow, and is also very tasty and healthy. For several years in a row, my neighbors in the country have faced a problem in growing beets. The leaves of the vegetable suddenly began to turn red.

The neighbors studied all the information on the Internet, consulted with seed sellers in specialized stores, and asked about the solution to the problem from familiar gardeners. And that's what they found out.

In fact, there are several varieties of our favorite vegetable that always have redder leaves than others. These are the varieties "Sugar" or "Burgundy".

In this case, don't worry. It also happens that beet leaves turn red from too much watering or plentiful feeding. If the vegetable does not have other problems, then you can also wait with the adoption of drastic measures.

In other cases, if the natural green color of the leaf significantly changes color towards red, then this signals any problems with growing the vegetable. Experienced gardeners divide all the reasons for changing the color of beet "tops" into 3 groups:

  • Too high acidity of the soil. The vegetable prefers neutral soils, with deviations from the optimal soil, the leaves change color, and the roots themselves develop poorly. You can correct the acidity of the soil with wood ash.
  • Deficiency of nutritional components. The soil can be not only acidic, but also poor in nutrients. Lack of potassium, sodium, magnesium or phosphorus also change the color of the leaves. Moderate feeding can help the plant, but do not forget that an overabundance of macro- and microelements also leads to a change in the color of the leaves.. It is imperative to observe the dosage indicated on the package.
  • Diseases caused by the fungus. If the beet leaves are not only reddened, but also covered with spots and holes, then most likely the plant has become infected with fungal diseases. This is the case with phomosis and cercospora. Most often, fungal infections occur in the second half of summer in wet weather. Diseases spread quickly, move to a root crop, and it is almost impossible to save the beet bed, especially if the lesion is neglected.

As it turned out, red beet leaves do not always indicate poor development. Unfortunately, the disease is difficult to cure, and all other problems are easy to solve. It is necessary to normalize plant nutrition, soil acidity and moisture regime.
