The smell of lilac bushes filling my entire plot intoxicates and intoxicates not only me, but also my neighbors. Many of them ask for layering of my white and lilac varietal bushes. The easiest and most affordable way to breed lilacs is by cuttings. I want to warn you right away - it's great if your lilac is "own-rooted", in other words, unvaccinated.

Modern types of lilacs are usually grafted onto a simple variety. Excavated shoots from grafted shrubs will not be varietal, since they retain the characteristics of the mother bush. Therefore, varietal lilacs can only be propagated by green cuttings.

The procedure for propagating lilac cuttings:

  • Select small green cuttings. These are young, not yet stiff twigs, on which 5-6 leaves have already grown. They should be cut off during the flowering of the bush. During this period, the growth of shoots stops, since the bush gives all its strength to flowering.
  • Several cuttings should be cut. As practice shows, only half of the branches have roots. From my own experience, I can say that the younger the bush from which the cuttings are cut, the more chances of rooting.

  • Cut the cuttings at an angle. Then the branches should be treated with any rooting stimulant.
  • If you plan to mass germinate cuttings, then you most likely need to take care of a small greenhouse. For several cuttings, trimmed plastic 5 liter bottles are suitable.

We prepare the soil. It is necessary to make a fairly deep groove (fossa) of about 15-20 cm. At the bottom of the groove we lay drainage (6-8 cm), then we throw in a layer of fertile soil, for example, humus mixed with the ground or rotted manure. Coarse sand or a mixture of peat and perlite (also 5-6 cm) should be laid out on top.

Moisten the prepared place for rooting lilacs well and set the cut cuttings in the soil so that they do not reach the fertile layer.

Then cover everything with plastic wrap or bottles. In order for the cuttings to feel good, it is better to shade planting in the heat. Also, do not forget to moisturize the cuttings. Over time, the leaves will fall off, and for some time it will not be clear whether the planted branches are still alive.

Only by the beginning of autumn the cuttings begin to open slightly. This will give you a new lilac bush. For the winter, the seedlings should be covered with spruce branches. And they can be transplanted only next spring.

Unfortunately, white lilacs rarely take root. But it is among the white lilacs that there are many beautiful terry varieties. These are the ones I usually buy here, maybe it will come in handy for you.
