Are subject to condensation any entrance doors, since the reliability of the door leaf is at the forefront, and reliability is achieved through the use of metal. The question is: how well the door is made and how much this effect is minimized by the manufacturer.
Insulation or good adhesion of the door to the box does not always guarantee the absence of water on the threshold, since there will always be areas on the material with a temperature lower than in the room, which means the appearance condensate.
99% of those faced with such a situation are residents of country houses, since only in such premises the front door serves as a barrier between the street and a warm room. The accumulation of condensation on metal elements is a very common phenomenon, since the thermal conductivity of the metal is much higher than that of other elements of the door structure.
Thermal conductivity is the ability of particles to transfer energy between areas of a material under different temperature conditions. The thermal conductivity coefficient is denoted λ (lambda) with unit of measure - W / (m°FROM). Than less meaning, the higher thermal protection of the material.
As you can see, the thermal conductivity of steel is 322 (58 / 0.18) times higher than that of pine, and 250 (58 / 0.23) times higher than that of oak.
When a temperature difference appears inside and outside, the metal element, due to its high thermal conductivity, does not retain heat. It spreads through the material and goes into a colder space, and the water contained in the air condenses on the surface.
So, there are only three reasons for moisture condensation (by priority):
- High indoor humidity.
- Low thermal insulation of the structure.
- Poor tightness of the joint between the box and the wall or door leaf and the box.
Negative consequences (by priority):
- Freezing of the front door.
- Corrosion of the door leaf and frame from the inside.
- Increased heat loss, and as a result - heating costs.
- Stains or mold on the slopes of the opening.
Elimination of reasons:
There are several proven methods, if followed, you can eliminate the cause of condensation. It is recommended to use all:
- Provide ventilation:
A) Ventilation of the room (when the air is not oversaturated with water, condensation does not form).
B) Ventilation of the door leaf (unknowingly, after installing the door, residents find holes in the upper and the lower parts of the door leaf (left deliberately by the installers) and cover them with various caps. As a result, there is no ventilation, the formed condensate inside the door flows down and in the absence of an exit - it remains there in the form of water - we get corrosion). - Insulate both the door leaf and the frame. It is also necessary to insulate all metal parts of the structure that go towards the living quarters - sometimes foam saves.
- Replace the rubber seal at the junction of the door leaf and the box (located along the perimeter of the box, door leaf, or in both cases, depending on the manufacturer).
- Use a keyhole cover. Currently, there are locks on sale where "shutters" are built into the key hole, pushed or extended by a key.
- Seal the junction of the box and the wall (+ anchoring (fastening) points).
- What about a vestibule device? It does not always save, or rather, it can improve the situation, but it will not completely save it. This is the case of my parents: the door is filled with insulation, the seals are new, there are no cracks - there is no blowing, outside -2 ° С, in the vestibule + 7 ° С. The difference is very small, and the result in the absence of ventilation is as follows:
Therefore, the best way out is to use everything proposed in the complex: provide good ventilation, remove direct cold bridges like a door peephole, seal the junctions and insulate the box along with the canvas!
