My friend, who after school started as a laborer at a construction site, has now grown to the owner of a small construction company. Yes, he has no education in construction, but he knew how to play it safe and always came out dry, and two years ago he got on the money, on decent money.
He had a customer with whom they entered into a contract for the construction of a house. Construction began in mid-autumn and the foundation was completed on a turnkey basis by the end of November.

The dimensions of the house are 11x14, and it is 6.5 m high (one floor with a basement). Estimated cost - 4.2 million rub.

The pit was dug to a depth of 1.8 m, despite the fact that in our northern part of the Rostov region the freezing depth is 90-100 cm.

After that, the construction was frozen until the next spring.

Further, a long story related to the personal circumstances of the owner of the site: in January, the contract with the construction company, the customer experienced financial difficulties and in 2016 lost his job, construction was postponed for 2 years and the site was temporarily abandoned. It was a long ride - about 170 km, and there was no point, except to pull the weed.

After 2 years, as soon as everything started to get better on the personal front, the customer "remembered" about his house, took out the project from the dusty shelf, updated the estimate and went to his overgrown plot. There was no limit to surprise, and at the same time to his indignation, the foundation strongly led and there was no longer an opportunity to continue further activities.

He found a developer and rolled out a claim that their construction company had made the foundation of poor quality.

Further, there was a court case, and running ahead, I will say that the court won - the owner of the site on which the foundation was located. The court recognized the developer's negligence.

Why?

The examination, carried out at the expense of the customer, showed that the foundation was deformed precisely because of the multidirectional stress vectors, caused by the forces of frost heaving of the soil, and therefore an amount was sent to the construction organization to compensate for damage in the amount of 420,000 rub.

The construction company has incontrovertible proof - the bottom of the foundation is buried below the mark freezing, moreover, to a depth even twice as high as this normalized mark (Foundation depth 1.8 m.).

But what is the depth of freezing?

The fact is that in the common people - the majority takes this depth as the depth from the surface of the site or land cover to the actual mark after excavation. But, this is a delusion.

In fact, it is the depth in the soil at which the soil temperature will reach 0 ° C under the influence of the lowest recorded temperature in the region. Not a word about the surface of the site.

It is the distance measured from the starting point to the 0 ° C point at the lowest temperature that means the depth of freezing.

Now, having studied the section of the structure, we will see that the foundation slab is NOT below the freezing depth, but is deepened only by the value of its thickness.

Subzero temperatures are easy to freeze the soil directly under the foundation slab itself.

Now the question arises, how could the construction organization help in this matter? She also made the foundation, and the customer accepted the work under the act and himself initiated the termination of the contract ...
According to the judge, it was the construction organization who had to ensure the protection of the entire structure from precipitation and influence negative temperatures upon completion of this cycle of work, namely, to build a temporary shelter using boards and roofing material (films).

In fact, on the one hand, the story is absurd, but on the other, it is very instructive and gives a person a correct understanding of what the true depth of freezing is.

The builders did not even think that this could happen. And the brigade just needed to provide shelter and fix everything in the photo, then there would be no problems.

The slab foundation is the most vulnerable structure for frost heaving of the soil until the house is built, therefore, leaving it for the winter, it is important to provide shelter and insulation.
