Greenhouses are no longer a rarity on personal plots. There are many materials from which both the frame and the dome can be made, but most gardeners try to use polycarbonate. It is a lightweight and at the same time durable material that transmits sunlight well and at the same time retains heat. A polycarbonate greenhouse is easy to install, so you can do the procedure yourself if necessary.

Characteristics of polycarbonate greenhouses

Now on the market there are many ready-made options for polycarbonate greenhouses that differ in shape, size, wall thickness and many other parameters. However, if necessary, the design can be made independently. Polycarbonate is a covering material that is attached to the frame. For the manufacture of the base, materials such as:

  • wooden slats;
  • steel corner;
  • profiled pipes;
  • galvanized profiles.
The most durable are the greenhouses, in which the frame is made of profiled pipes and galvanized profiles. In addition, covering material is easier to attach to these materials. It is better to use cellular polycarbonate for arranging the structure. It consists of 2 or more sheets connected by jumpers. Despite this structure, the material transmits light well, but at the same time retains the maximum amount of heat.

Material with a thickness of 24 and 34 mm is best suited for arranging such structures. It tolerates frost well down to -50 ° C and heat up to + 60 ° C. When planning a greenhouse, it is necessary to take into account that several opening ventilation hatches (from 2 to 4) should be present in the upper part of the structure. For a comfortable use of the structure, it is better to make it at least 220 cm high. The width should be from 2 m. This will facilitate the formation of internal supports, to which tomatoes or cucumbers will be attached in the future.

More and more people prefer to build greenhouses on foundations, because in this case the structure has a more aesthetic appearance and is the most convenient to use. Illustration for this article is used under a standard license © ofazende.com

Installation of polycarbonate greenhouses

For a long time, greenhouses were settled directly on the ground and had no foundation, i.e. foundation. The weight of such a structure is extremely small, so the soil can serve as a reliable support for the structure. However, more and more people prefer to build greenhouses on a foundation, since in this case the structure has a more aesthetic appearance and is the most convenient to use.

Moreover, in some cases, the arrangement of the foundation is mandatory. This is necessary if the structure is located on an inclined surface or is intended for year-round use. A foundation is a must when a semi-underground structure is made to grow vegetables and seedlings from mid-winter.

The foundation is made lightweight and shallow. This is due to the fact that even large greenhouses are relatively light in weight. When forming the foundation, in this case, concrete is rarely poured, since in order to create a reliable base, you can use materials such as bricks, gravel, reinforced concrete blocks and other piece building material.

If the owners want to get rid of the greenhouse, the foundation can be easily removed along with the main structure, which is not so easy to do if the strip base was poured. The width of the foundation walls does not exceed 10 cm.

When forming the base, it is necessary to immediately install scraps from the steel corner, to which the frame will be attached in the future. This will make it easier to build the dome. After the foundation is ready, the frame is installed. Polycarbonate sheets are attached to it from above. It is recommended to seal the joints between the elements of the covering material with a sealant and glue it with aluminum tape.

A properly installed greenhouse will require minimal maintenance in the future. In winter, you need to clean the dome of snow. In the spring, before planting plants, the structure should be thoroughly washed and disinfected. In autumn, it is necessary to remove all plant residues and decontaminate the dome and the soil inside the structure.
