Choosing the right time to board
The time at which it is allowed to start planting grapes in spring depends on the regional characteristics and the climate in your area. The type of seedling is also taken into account, it can be:
- With open roots.
- With a closed root system.
Seedlings with open roots are planted in early spring if the ground is already warm enough. This period is different in different regions:
- In the southern regions, planting begins in March-April.
- In the middle latitudes (Moscow region and the nearest regions) grapes are planted in the second half of May. Earlier disembarkation is allowed, but to protect the landings from possible night frosts, you will need to build a reliable shelter.
- It is better for winegrowers of Siberia and the Ural region to postpone planting until the end of May. This time is also optimal for the Leningrad region.
A planting specimen with a closed root system is kept in containers and moved into open soil only when a stable temperature of + 10... + 15 ° C appears. At the time of planting, the ground should warm up to + 8... + 10 ° C.
If you move a green seedling to a cold substrate, this will negatively affect its further development and can provoke the death of the roots. To eliminate this, you should wait for stable heat.
Landing rules
The effectiveness of the development of the vine and the indicators of its yield directly depend on the observance of the planting rules. Therefore, the grower needs to take a responsible approach to the choice of timing and place for growing crops.
The choice of a seedling is especially important. If you are going to grow a plant for the first time, try to find a trusted supplier of planting material - he can share detailed information about the seedlings. They must meet the following criteria:
- The variety is suitable for growing in your area.
- The seedling has a developed root system.
- If a specimen with open roots is selected, the aerial part should not have leaves. Seedlings in containers are sold with 2-3 healthy leaves.
- Good planting material has no cracks, any damage or mold.
Before planting in open soil, preparatory measures are necessary to assess the condition of the seedlings and increase the survival rate of plants:
- First you need to inspect the bush, carry out a light pruning of the top. A healthy seedling has a light green tint. The presence of stains or foreign inclusions indicates poor quality of the planting material.
- After that, you need to inspect the root system, cutting off its lower part by 1-2 cm. Good roots have a light coffee shade.
- The main roots should be shortened so that their length is no more than 15-20 cm (some growers shorten the roots to 10 cm). If you leave longer roots, they will be bent upwards when planting, this will prevent the plant from adapting to new conditions.
In addition, preparatory actions include preliminary soaking of seedlings. To do this, they are immersed in a container with water heated to room temperature and kept in it for 12-24 hours. Before planting in the soil, the roots should be treated with a clay mash.
After all the above measures have been taken, the grapes can be planted. This will require a pit, which is located on the northern side of the site and is reliably protected from drafts.
