Many gardeners are interested in how to transplant and propagate lilies in the garden, as this plant is very difficult to tolerate changes in growing conditions. The transplanting process largely depends on the type of flower and its age.

How to transplant lilies?
Lilies need to be planted regularly, at least once every 3-4 years. If this is not done, the thickening of the plantings will cause the appearance of small flowers or their absence.
In central Russia, these crops are recommended to be replanted in August or September, when the plants have faded. In the southern regions, this procedure can be carried out later, even at the end of October. If the lily is planned to be transplanted, wilted inflorescences should be removed from the stems so that the plant does not waste energy on the formation of seeds. In rare cases, it is possible to move the culture in a flowering state, but this is fraught with a long period of adaptation. Most often, Asian varieties can tolerate such changes.
In order for the plant to quickly get used to a new place, some rules must be observed when transplanting. For example, it is recommended to carefully remove the bulb from the ground, taking care not to damage the roots. If spots or damage are visible on the underground part of the lily, it is not suitable for transplanting. Old scales are removed from the bulb and the daughter ones are disconnected from the mother part.
Then the seedlings are kept in a disinfecting solution for 20-30 minutes. Flower wells are prepared based on the size of the bulb: the grooves should be 3 times larger. For the maternal part, the pit must be increased by another 10 cm so that the roots lie freely in the ground.
A drainage layer in the form of sand is laid at the bottom of the pit. A distance of 15-20 cm is left between the specimens. Having placed the bulb in the hole, the roots are first sprinkled with sand, and then fertile soil is placed. The beds are watered and a layer of mulch is laid on them.
How to propagate lilies?
There are many ways to breed lily plants, so you don't always have to wait until the end of the season to dig up the underground part and divide it up. A lot of planting material is easy to obtain using scales.
To do this, you do not need to dig up the bulbs. It is necessary to clear the flower from the ground so as not to touch the roots and carefully remove the scales from the base of the bulb. They need to be put in a disinfecting solution for 20 minutes, and then treated with a growth stimulator. Then the scales are powdered with charcoal, put in a bag with sand and peat.
The bag is tied, leaving air in it, and placed in a dark place at room temperature. If everything was done correctly, after 7-8 weeks, small bulbs will grow on the scales. This planting material must be separated and transferred to boxes for them to grow.
This method is not used for varieties with small bulbs, since it is difficult to detach the scales from them without damaging the underground part of the plant.
Lily can be propagated by cuttings. The procedure must be carried out after the plant has faded. Take the top of a large shoot and divide it into equal parts, leaving 5-6 leaves on each. The greens from the bottom are removed, leaving only 2-3 leaves at the top. This planting material is put in a growth stimulator for 8-12 hours. For seedlings, holes with drainage and nutrient soil should be prepared.
The stalk is planted, deepening it by half and tilting it at an angle of 45-60 °. The garden must be watered and then covered with foil. Every day, the shelter is removed for ventilation, and when installing it back, they make sure that there is no moisture on it. When the bulbs appear on the stems, it will be possible to transfer the lilies to a permanent place on the site.
For propagation of lily flowers, you can take bulbs. During the flowering period, these parts are formed on the leaves and stem. If the bulb easily detaches from the trunk, it has small roots, it means that it is ready for planting (most often this happens after flowering).
At first, it is recommended to keep the planting material for 23-25 days in the refrigerator at a temperature of + 3... + 4 ° С. Then they should be sown on an open bed or in a container. A distance of 4-5 cm is left between the seedlings. After sprinkling with earth, the bulbs should be watered, covered with mulch (it is better to take peat crumbs).
On the open ground for the winter, lilies propagated by bulbs must be covered.
