  • Dec 13, 2020

White boletus is listed in the Red Book, so its collection is prohibited. It is required to study the features and characteristics of this mushroom in order not to accidentally damage the colony in the forest or not to destroy a valuable specimen, confusing it with a toadstool.

Description of the white look

Aspen boletuses are always distinguished by a beautiful bright hat. It can take on a reddish, yellow, orange or chocolate hue. The white mushroom's cap is so light that it looks whitish in a dark forest. In young specimens, it is distinguished by a light green or pinkish tint. When mature, it becomes creamy or yellowish. The surface of the cap is dry and rough to the touch.

In diameter, this boletus often reaches from 5 to 14 cm. There are also larger specimens, the size of which can exceed 24 cm. In a young porcini mushroom, the cap is spherical and well pressed against the stem. As it grows, it expands in diameter and straightens out.

The leg of the white variety is dense and well developed. It is covered with small flakes. At first they have a creamy hue, but as they age it changes to coffee. The mushroom reaches a height of 15 cm. Larger specimens can grow up to 30 cm.

Boletus of a rare shade, like its counterparts, belongs to tubular mushrooms. At first, the flesh under the cap has a pleasant white color. Over time, it changes to a dirty gray. At the end of the stem, the mushroom may acquire a blue or greenish tint. The pulp is quite dense and firm to the touch. The cut boletus does not lose its original shape and breaks into pieces. From under the cap, spores may spill out of a coffee shade.

The cut mushroom will turn blue over time and soon turn black. The cut itself has a light purple tint.

Growing places

White varieties often form a tandem with birch, aspen and coniferous trees. If the summer is dry, there is a chance to meet an endangered species only near the trunk of an aspen. This tree retains a sufficient amount of moisture under the crown, which the mycelium needs for the development of fruit bodies. Under optimal weather conditions, the colony can create entire glades. But, unlike other varieties, this boletus is quite rare.

The first white fruiting bodies appear in the second decade of June, and they can be found until early October. The mushroom lives only half a month. Then he grows old, pours out spores and dies.

On the territory of the Russian Federation, the endangered species is found in the north and west. There are places of its growth both in Siberia and on the shores of Lake Baikal. You can find the mushroom in the rest of the world. It occasionally appears in Western Europe, in the northern states of the United States and throughout Belarus.

Although the white mushroom is considered edible and can be used in cooking, if found it must be left in place and not cut. The rash of spores, which ends the existence of the fruiting body, is necessary for the further development and functioning of the mycelium.
