Preparing apple trees for winter: protection from rodents and winds

  • Dec 13, 2020

Good afternoon, my reader. For the most part, apple trees are not afraid of frost, but they need winter shelter to protect them from winds and rodents. Hares and other animals use the bark of young trees for food, exposing the trunk and depriving it of its natural defenses.

Shelter apple trees for the winter

Apple trees are frost-resistant trees, but a strong wind in frost dries out their bark, which becomes fragile and brittle. To avoid this, it is necessary to wrap up the plants for the winter, which will help protect them from sunburn in early spring. It is necessary to hide plantings for up to 7 years, after which there is no need for wrapping, but it is necessary to prepare for winter every year.

Before the onset of frost, the tree is abundantly watered and fed with fertilizers. After the foliage has completely fallen off, the dead bark is removed and treated with a solution of ferrous sulfate.

After the performed manipulations, the trunk circle is insulated. For this, sawdust or garden soil is used. The mulch layer should be at least 3 cm. In young apple trees, the root collar is very vulnerable. An additional layer of mulch is used to hide it.

Additional protection measures

In the fall, the apple trees must be whitened, but not with lime, but with a specially prepared solution. It includes:

  • copper sulfate - 1 kg;
  • lime - 2 kg;
  • water - 20 l.

Lime mortar is suitable for trees over 7 years old. For young seedlings, use chalk instead of lime.

To provide reliable protection from rodents, around the trunk, branches of raspberry, spruce, hazel, cherry are tied at the base. You can use the materials at hand - roofing material, a small metal net. Before tying with unnatural materials, it is recommended to protect the trunk with burlap.

In regions with snowy winters, seedlings can be covered with snow. After each snowfall, it is necessary to huddle the trees again and remove snow from the upper branches so that they do not break.

Shelter for columnar apple trees

In columnar-shaped apple trees, the top requires special protection from cold weather. If it freezes, the seedling will throw out several vertical shoots, which will lead to the growth of the apple tree in two trunks and the loss of its columnar shape. Protection of the top is provided by covering it with rags and wrapping the top with a film.

The young tree can be tied to a solid support. This will avoid breaking it from strong winter winds.

The root area of columnar apple trees also needs insulation. For this purpose, sawdust, spruce branches, straw are used. Old nylon stockings wrapped around the trunk can serve as protection against rodents.

In the spring, as soon as the sun begins to warm up, trees are freed from wrapping in the morning and evening. This will provide the apple trees with the necessary ventilation so that they do not overheat. The root area is completely freed from the mulch layer - rotting of the root system can begin in warm and damp soil.
