Good afternoon, my reader. In order for the horseradish harvest to be plentiful, it is necessary to prepare everything for planting it in the fall.

Useful properties of horseradish
Horseradish is a plant with a voluminous, richly branching rhizome covered with a yellowish bark, contains a large amount of vitamin C and minerals: calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium and others. The plant also contains phytoncides, which cause antimicrobial properties, and mustard glucoside, which gives it a pungent, aromatic odor.
Horseradish leaves are large, elongated, dark green. The flowers of the plant smell nice, but are unable to form seeds.
The rhizome is used as a seasoning for various dishes, and the leaves are salted.
How to prepare for boarding
First you need to choose a place. Horseradish is unpretentious, but it has a favorite soil:
- loam - mainly clay with a small amount of sand;
- sandy loam - a mixture of sand and clay with black soil.
It is in these soils that horseradish grows especially fragrant and not woody. The plant feels good in the field after potatoes, tomatoes and other vegetables. Horseradish grows all year round, but it is better to breed it within one season. Preparation for this event begins in the autumn. The landing site is prepared as follows:
- spread out compost or manure evenly;
- dig deeply.
- prepare planting material.
For planting, thin rhizomes are selected, cutting them obliquely from the bottom. Trimming is done for convenience, to recognize in the spring where the spine is up. The roots are sprinkled with dry sand and placed in a cool room.
Landing
In the spring, the prepared material is taken out. You can also take horseradish cuttings directly in the spring, only by freeing them from all lateral branches and leaving one independent rhizome.
There are 2 planting methods. It depends on whether there was little or much snow:
- In furrows (if the ground is normally moist). The rhizome is cut down, at an angle.
- Into ridges (if the ground is excessively wet). The roots are placed in the holes made with a sharp stake, also with a cut down.
The covered cuttings trample well - this will increase the yield.
Care and cleaning
As the weeds grow, the horseradish is weeded and hoe. Until the fall, you will need to do this only a few times. It is recommended to feed the plant with mineral fertilizers.
In mid-July, the roots are exposed and the lateral branches are cut off, if it is not planned to collect planting material from this plant in the fall.
In autumn, horseradish is dug up, the rhizomes are separated from the leaves and sorted.
The plant is able to quickly capture a large area. To avoid this, after harvesting, the ground should be carefully dug up and all the cut parts of the rhizome should be selected.
