Good afternoon, my reader. It would seem that there is nothing difficult in planting vegetables. Careful care of the future harvest should bear fruit. Therefore, for many novice gardeners it becomes a discovery that not all vegetables can be planted nearby. There are cultures that do not tolerate neighborhoods and, as a result, oppress each other. What vegetables do not grow well near? How will mixed plantings help? Let's figure it out together.

The advantages of mixed plantings
We know little about mixed plantings and often plant vegetables incorrectly. Why is the close proximity of potatoes with cucumbers or bell peppers to the same root vegetable undesirable?
Scientists believe that it's all about allelopathy: plants secrete amino acids, hormones and enzymes that negatively affect the root system of neighboring vegetables.
But this is more of a theory. In practice, in order to successfully grow a crop, you need to plant crops so that one plant has a beneficial effect on another, serves as a protector from the scorching sun or from insect pests.
Correct planting of vegetable crops
Potatoes
Potatoes are considered a picky crop. The only danger for him is the Colorado beetles. To scare away the pest, bush beans, coriander, catnip, tansy and marigolds are planted.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes grow well next to many crops. Planted nearby dioecious nettle improves tomato juice. But kohlrabi, fennel and dill are unimportant companions for tomatoes.
Cabbage
Cabbage requires special care and is often prone to disease due to various pests. Even when ripe, cabbage heads can be partially damaged. Good helpers for cabbage are celery and dill. Celery frightens off white flies, and dill protects future heads of cabbage from caterpillars and aphids.
Cucumbers
This favorite vegetable of the pumpkin family is best planted next to sunflowers and corn. Cucumbers are weaving, and they will like this neighborhood. You can also plant them next to curly beans.
But potatoes for cucumbers will become an unimportant companion.
Reference:there are disputes about the compatibility of tomatoes and cucumbers, but it has been noticed that vegetables coexist well in greenhouses.
Carrot
It is recommended to plant carrots next to onions. So they protect each other from onion flies. Dill, celery, parsley and anise are dangerous for an orange vegetable.
Reference:umbrella crops attract carrot flies, which cause irreparable harm to carrots.
Beans
Beans are considered a friendly plant and many cultures coexist with them. Plant nearby corn, eggplant, beets, lettuce and get a great harvest. But most comfortable next to beans, tomatoes and cucumbers.
Pepper
This healthy vegetable has long been a guest on our table. However, it should be remembered that it is impossible to plant different varieties of pepper next to it. Potatoes will become an unimportant neighbor for pepper, which takes all the important elements from the soil for intensive growth. Cucumbers and dill will not benefit the vegetable either.
Reference: Bulgarian pepper is thermophilic and does not tolerate moisture. It is recommended to plant it next to corn. Long, high stems will reliably protect the “Bulgarian” from cool winds. Bush beans will keep the peppers free of pests and fill the soil with beneficial nitrogen.
And more useful tips for every day:
- it is not recommended to plant a number of representatives of the same families. Especially the umbrella ones quarrel among themselves;
- lettuce and spinach release nutrients and improve the soil;
- corn and sunflower create a good microclimate;
- the optimal width of the vegetable bed should be no more than one meter.
Subject to all the rules, a good harvest awaits you. Good luck to you!
