Good afternoon, my reader. Freezing damage is harmful to many garden crops. We are talking not only about edible, but also ornamental plants. Frost can cause significant damage to both fruit trees, grapes and raspberries, and various types of flowers. This article will focus on the most vulnerable crops in need of proper care before the onset of cold weather.

Grapes

We will start with the most frost-resistant plant. Grapes are a thermophilic crop that reacts sharply to lower temperatures. After it drops to minus 2-3 degrees, leaves and shoots begin to die off. The cold also affects the berries, which become soft and tasteless.

If the temperature reaches minus 5-6 degrees, the next year's harvest will be threatened, since the unripe buds accumulate damage, which affects the formation of future brushes.

What can be done to save the grapes? In fact, there are a number of solutions that are presented below:

  • Pruning. The most successful solution would be pruning the shoots, which will surely grow back next year. It is important to do proper pruning in order to leave some of the buds.
  • Smoke. This method involves creating a smoke screen that heats the air around the plant, preventing it from freezing. Usually used as an emergency measure. Sawdust, straw or fallen leaves are used to form smoke.
  • Shelter. Another popular method is to cover the grapes during frosts. To do this, use the same sawdust, straw or fallen leaves. For shelter, it is advisable to prune, then bend the branches to the ground and fix.

Raspberry

Autumn frosts also affect the condition of such a fruit shrub as raspberries. The remontant varieties of this plant are especially susceptible to the influence of cold weather. In this case, frozen raspberries immediately become watery and lose their taste. There is little use from such a crop, and so that the berries do not completely deteriorate, they need to be urgently processed into compote or jam. To protect your crop, you need to know in advance about the upcoming frost and collect raspberries from the bushes.

Fruit trees

Of course, the onset of frost threatens unharvested apple and pear trees. The fruits of these fruit trees become wrinkled and shrink. In this case, there is a loss of taste. Of course, you can cook jams or compotes from frozen fruits, but to keep apples and pears fresh, it is also better to collect them in advance. It is worth considering that pears are more thermophilic and begin to deteriorate even at a temperature of +8 degrees.

Flowers and ornamental plants

Frost also affects flowering plants. In the fall, many representatives of this type of country vegetation are still blooming. These include marigolds, marigolds and some types of roses. However, unexpected frosts can destroy your flower bed in the blink of an eye. To help flowers cope with a short-term drop in temperature, follow these tips:

  • In the case of asters, marigolds, daisies and verbena, frosts are not terrible, since these flowers perfectly tolerate moderate subzero temperatures.
  • Marigolds, ageratums, balsams should be covered with sawdust, fallen leaves or straw.
  • Tall flowers can be saved in polystyrene boxes, which can be used next year after a one-time production.
